Overview
There is no single reason that a Knight might decide to forsake their House and become a Freeblade. Some are Nobles who have dishonoured themselves or have otherwise been banished. Some are victims of circumstance, being stranded too far from home or having fought so along across the stars that solitude is all they know. In some cases, they may be the sole survivor of their House. Whatever the reason, Freeblades set off into the galaxy alone questing for worthy causes and foes, while others may search out an injustice to rectify. Rarely Freeblades will become reclusive, willing to fight only to protect their hermitage, while others may be driven mad by isolation or circumstance. These Freeblades become murderous destroyers more akin to supernatural beings. Whatever the cause, they are more bonded to their Knights uits units than ever and in many cases the warrior has fused with their vehicle and their Machine Spirit.20a
Freeblades tend to travel alone, while others may have a small group of retainers such as Armiger bondsmen and Sacristans. It is also not uncommon for Freeblades to band together and form lances that fight in the same manner as a Household. After the battle has been won, such Freeblade groups typically disperse although some have been known to remain in each other's company for an extended period of time. Regardless of their past circumstances or present company, Freeblades still place great significance on acts and honour and duty. Thus wherever they travel, they will often fight to protect the people of the Imperium and punish the foes of mankind.20a
