Despite their reputation as savages, the White Scars are an extremely cultured chapter that emphasises art, poetry, stoicism, philosophy, and self-reflection in its warriors. Members of the Chapter are expected to be well-versed in the linguistic, historical, and artistic history of Chogoris. Other "noble pursuits" of Battle-Brothers include calligraphy, hunting, storytelling, winemaking, archery, horse-taming, throat singing, astrology, painting, crafting, weaving, and mastery of the difficult Chogorian language. This is mixed with more seemingly primitive practices, such as ritual scarring which marks the loyalty and brotherhood of a Space Marine. The ritual scarring mimics that of the tribes of Chogoris and is carried out with the same ritual Jaalod'ag daggers. Once the chosen shape has been cut, ash is used to raise the tissue and whiten the reside ridge, creating the "white scar" that gives the Chapter its name.40b
Members of the Chapter often decorate their armour with symbols that are near-indecipherable to outsiders but represent battles, years of service, number of kills, Chogorian mythology, oaths, memories, battlefield roles, philosophical concepts, and more.40b
The symbol of the White Scars is a red lightning bolt upon a white plain, which true to the Chapters culture has a variety of meanings. The lightning bolt represents the swift and furious nature of the Chapter at war. The gold bar it sits upon represents preciousness, while the white border represents freedom. The symbol's concave sides and ends represent the fact that others will always attempt to impinge upon their freedom, and one should be ready to fight for it. The redness of the lightning bolt represents the blood that must be spilled in this fight. Other notable symbols within the White Scars are the Ulzi, a knotwork representing what Chogorians call the Eternal Labyrinth. The Moderg'haan is the Tree of Knowledge, representing how the smallest enquiry can lead to great knowledge. The Daeleivot is the Ocean of the Grasslands, representing the enormous plains of Chogoris and freedom.40b
The White Scars also consider it important to retain links with their successors. This is reflected in the tradition known as the Rite of Blooding, whereby once a cycle, champions from the various Successor Chapters come together to duel. The winner will join the White Scars for a full cycle to learn from the Founders before returning to their home chapter. The current holder of this position is Thursk of the Dark Hunters, who fought with Kor'sarro Khan on Agrellan.40b

Those who are successful in passing the trials must then chose an honour name. Some choose to replace their birth name with this; others choose to use it as a kind of surname or epithet. A key component of this practice is the element of choice, with the young Space Marines studying the history and legends of their Chapter to find a suitable name. It is not unheard of for some aspirants to fight (usually non-lethal) honour duels with each other if they choose the same name.40b
