The autogun is similar to a twentieth century automatic rifle in operation. It has a high rate of fire, shooting bursts of high-velocity rounds. It uses small caliber, caseless ammunition made from metal or synthetic materials. Its main advantage is that it doesn't require a high technological base to manufacture. Autoguns often find their way into the hands of all forms of militia, and are the standard arm in less advanced cultures.

In game terms, autoguns are identical in killing power to the lasgun and rarely used in the Imperial Guard arsenal. However, autoguns remain in service in Planetary Defence Forces throughout the Imperium.

Autoguns are also available in the Necromunda tabletop game.

The word "autogun" is sometimes, and incorrectly, used interchangably with the word "stubber", and can refer to a autopistol.
