Sump City.[2]

Sump City is an Underhive settlement in Necromunda's Hive Primus and is the closest to its Hive Bottom.[1]

History

The settlement was built on the shores of the Great Sump and for as long as it has existed, people have come to Sump City to hunt the Spiders that dwell in the Sump's black waters. Because of this, the hunters' Harpoon Barges can be found moored around Sump City's docks and shores, in between their trips to bring back the Spiders' diamond eyes. But because of the settlement's location near the Great Sump, Sump City has been sinking since its founding. Even as it does, however, Sump City's population simply builds atop the settlement's structures, ensuring the city's existence continues. By the reckoning of the locals, the current Sump City is the eleventh to stand on the site, though it is difficult to tell. This is due to the tangle of sunken structures that make up its foundations and some even say that the first Sump City was built on the ruins of a settlement known as Downtown.[1]

Regardless of the truth, no gives much mind to where the settlement's sunken portions end up, after they sink into the rotten bedrock. According to the old legless sumpfarer known as Mercia, however, the sunken parts of Sump City come to rest in a giant cavern beneath the settlement, that has been made into a city by House Delaque. Mercia claims to have even sailed his ship into the cavern city's subterranean lake, where he says Delaque keeps their cephalopod creatures and stone gods. Most people scoff at Mercia's ravings, though, and say there is nothing but starving Mutants and mangy critters beneath Sump City. Even those that have gone to seek out the Delaque city, have had no luck in finding the cavern. However not only is Mercia speaking the truth, his discovery of the city caused House Delaque to capture him and the experience caused the sumpfarer to become Mad Mercia.[1]
