The term "synod" can refer to the Adeptus Ministorum synod which rules over an Imperial Cardinal World. The ruling Ministorum synod with authority over all other Cardinal Worlds is the Holy Synod of Terra.

Mechanicus
Alternatively, a forge-synod is a religious governing body of the Adeptus Mechanicus that rules over a Forge World.[1] Each Forge World's forge-synod ultimately owes fealty to the Synod of Mars as the predominant synod of their religion, the Cult Mechanicus.[2]
