Talassar is an Imperial ocean world, located in the Realm of Ultramar in the Ultima Segmentum.[1][2]
History
During the Horus Heresy, the planet was assaulted by the Word Bearers as part of the Shadow Crusade.[4] Thrown into unrest by the Shadow Crusade, Talassar was subsequently conquered by a Night Lords warband led by Mawdrym Llansahai. The Night Lords managed to convince parts of the local garrison to defect to their side,[7a] and they plundered the local Ultramarines gene-seed stockpiles to create Inductii to bolster their numbers.[7b] In 010.M31, a Blood Angels and Solar Auxilia strike force raided Talassar to recover the remaining gene-seed; this operation succeeded and greatly weakened the Night Lords presence, but the loyalists withdrew.[7a][7c] For months after the raid, Talassar fell into complete anarchy as various factions (including the surviving Night Lords) fought for control until the planet was later retaken by the Ultramarines.[7c]
After the Horus Heresy, in the period known as the Age of Rebirth, a great horde of Orks descended on the main continent of Talassar, Glaudor, threatening to destroy cities there. Following the protocols of the newly approved Codex Astartes, the Ultramarines made a series of rapid strikes and defeated the greenskins.[6b][8]
Cato Sicarius, former Captain of the Ultramarines' Second Company and Master of the Watch, was born to Talassari nobility, and was trained in the arts of war from a young age. His power sword, the Talassarian Tempest Blade, takes its name from his homeworld's frequent storms. Among Captain Sicarius's many honorific titles is Grand Duke of Talassar.[1]
In 854999.M41, the Daemon Prince M'kar personally led the onslaught against Talassar. Marneus Calgar brought the 1st Company of the Ultramarines to Talassar, determined to once again slay M'kar. After the great battle, Calgar was nearly defeated by M'kar but was saved by the arrival of the 2nd and 4th Companies of the Ultramarines, led by Captains Cato Sicarius and Uriel Ventris, respectively. Ventris pronounced the mortal name of the Daemon Prince, and gave the Shard of Erebus to Calgar, who used it to stab M'kar in the throat. As a result, M'kar was destroyed once and for all.[3c]
Talassar is now the homeworld of the Void Tridents, a Space Marine Chapter created during the Ultima Founding.[5]
Geography
Talassar is a planet of stormy seas and islands of rock. It has a single continent named Glaudor, which was the site of a major battle between the Ultramarines and Ork invaders just after the Horus Heresy.[3a][6b]
Notable Places
- Castra Tanagra - an ancient fortress located in a valley on Glaudor, the site of an ancient battle between the Orks and the Ultramarines. During the battle, an enormous hole was breached in the walls, but Roboute Guilliman refused to have it repaired, decreeing that the fortress would stand in its battered condition as a monument to those who died during the battle. All Neophyte Ultramarines are required to make a pilgrimage to the fortress after their induction into the Ultramarines.[3b]
- Velx City - major settlement by the Horus Heresy[7a]
- Castrum Velx - an Ultramarines fortress which was captured and used as headquarters of the Night Lords during their rule of the planet[7a]
Trivia
- The name Talassar possibly derives from Thalassa, which was the Greek word for "sea" along with being the name of the personification of the sea in Greek mythology.
