Talk:Alaric
Rewrite needed
This page for Alaric obviously needs completely rewritten as the current material is lacking and unstructured - I've just finished the three books and fancy having a stab at writing some of this up, is there a page for a similar type of character which is structurally complete and worth using as a template? - Honestly I can't think of one. Mostly because this guy is a "random dude", he doesn't fit in structures like Primarchs do. Basically take any 2 biographies on wikipedia and confront them, you'll notice how little they usually have in common., this said, yes, the article needs work. --Madness 02:31, 30 April 2008 (CEST)
- The first change should be seperating sources from background...--Genestealer 02:49, 30 April 2008 (CEST)
- Fair comments, I guess the easiest way to structure the article is following his three main campaigns against Ghargatuloth, against the Castigator and then finally on Drakaasi. As a character he is 'just' a grey knight with the equipment and abilities you'd expect so there's not really any information needed there. Johnmcl7 02:26, 1 May 2008 (CEST)
- Well it doesn't HAVE to be "techy" in full army-list style. He participated to 3 campaigns? 3 headings, then you can go in detail on what happened where and how, remember tho that you must summarize, not scan+ocr+copypaste the book. :) Still, there is plenty of informations and interlinking you can do just by this. Remember to put sources with notes where due (sources go at the bottom, as usual), link every sensible keyword (only once per keyword, on the first occurring, we don't want 3000 links to Grey Knights in one page), and categorize, maps, dates, designations of allies (IE.: he fought here alongside 69th Necromundan Grenadiers, or stuff like that.) I hope I gave you enough ideas on how to expand and structure. One day I'll have to do an article on the Red Gobbo and Kal Jericho, I foresee a big pain in the arse.--Madness 02:36, 1 May 2008 (CEST)
- Okay, some minor changes - then go for it, Johnmcl7.--Genestealer 02:45, 1 May 2008 (CEST)
- Is this too much? --Alpheus 2318, 23 June 2009(CEST)

More sections please
Split the article using some headers, the prose is too "text-wall", making it hard for lazy people like me to read, try to be syntetic, encyclopedic, and structured when creating a page. When writing for the web, try to keep sentences short, use a lot of paragraph separation (like a paragraph every hundred of words as an average for long paragraphs) and use headings as well.
You're not doing a bad job, if you were writing for a book or a scientific paper your style would fit perfectly, but the web is like the radio, people "tune in" at the middle of a sentence, where they find "hot words" that capture their attention, the more a paragraph is long, the more it scares away the surfer.
It's a shame, because we'll never have a "War and Peace" equivalent for the web, but sadly it's what the medium dictates.
Also, if Alaric is featured as an illustration inside the book or on a book cover (even better if you find the book cover illustration without the book title or other writings on it) please include the image.
Please forgive me for asking you to basically "dumb down" the article, but I work as a web developer and I keep contacts with many web writers and editors, and I know by experience that the web has the aforementioned rules. Hopefully you will be able to find a middle ground that satisfies both. --Madness 11:21, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- With regards to a picture of Alaric, I don't think there are any - the one on the article at the moment is definitely not Alaric even though it's taken from the cover of the omnibus as the picture shows a Grey Knight with a bionic eye or targeter of some sort which Alaric didn't have and the shield with the personal heraldry on the shoulder doesn't match Alaric's. The cover art on the individual books doesn't match Alaric either, the first one is possibly Tancred but the other two don't appear to match anyone in the books. Johnmcl7 01:08, 16 April 2014 (CEST)
