I'd have to dig around, but I've seen other references to the Column being made up of not just the Imperial Fists, but of Blood Angels, and White Scars also. All of the Marines who fell during the defense of Terra. There is another reference to a "Pillar of Bone" that is solely a a monument to the Imperial Fists, as the last pillar of their old Terra Fortress Monastery on Terra before the Heresy, and where they places relics of their dead.
