VArdan Rifile were NOT fighing on their homeworld but had arrived on the planet that included Boucheroc 10 years before the narritive.
The Vardans are never described as specialists in tranch warfare the only reason they are participating in trench warfare is due to the command descisions in the Boucheroc campaign
