The Fang[1] also called The Aett[13] is the Fortress Monastery of the Space Wolves chapter, located on their homeworld of Fenris.[1]

Overview

Called the Fang by outsiders, and the Aett by the Vlka Fenryka themselves,[15] is located on the highest peak of a mountain range towards the centre of Asaheim. These mountains are the tallest on Fenris, and the highest is located at the centre of the range, looking like a great fang above the other mountains.[1]

It is perhaps the greatest fortress constructed since the fortifications of the Imperial Palace on Terra,[1] which the Fang is said to only be second to.[17b] The fortress is so big as to pierce the atmosphere of Fenris, providing a docking point for orbiting spacecraft and allowing quick access to the surface without having to use sub-orbital transport. The Fang is clad in immensely thick armour and is protected by void shields stronger even than those on the mightiest Imperial warships. Shafts have been cut into the mountainside, concealing vast defense laser batteries capable of blasting the biggest ships in the galaxy. These weapons are as old as the Chapter itself, a testament to the reliability of the level of technology produced during the Great Crusade. Also, the thermal reactors powering the weapons and shields are of that age, wondrous though it is to think they still actually work.[1]

The top of The Fang is the centre of the Space Wolves' fleet dock where hundreds of ships are moored. They can be easily maintained and materials can be moved easily from surface to space via this huge fortress. It is from here that the Space Wolves set out on missions across the galaxy.[1]

A non-exhaustive example of locations unique to The Fang itself include the following:

  • Bjorn's Shrine - A shrine dedicated to Bjorn the Fell-Handed[17a]
  • Bloodfire and Sunrising Gates - Enormous entry ways into The Fang, heavily defended and overlooking barren plains which make direct assault useless.[10f]
  • Valgard - The upper portion of The Fang and the part visible above ground.[10b]
    • Chamber of Annulus - The uppermost portion of the Valgard and the central command chamber of The Fang. It is here that Chapter councils are held.[10b]
    • Chamber of The Watch - Operations center of The Fang and used to direct its defenses.[10c]
  • Hall of the Great Wolf - Currently known as the Hall of King Leman Russ. The central feasting hall and the spot where Leman Russ announced his intent to leave Fenris.[12]
  • Hall of Banners[12]
  • Jarlheim - Contains the hearths and shrines to the fallen as well as the Chapter armoury.[10d]
  • Fangthane - massive hall which connects the Valgard to Hould. Hundreds of thousands of Chapter Serfs can fit within the space, which contains a huge statue of Leman Russ and his two wolves Freki and Geri.[10d]
  • Hould - Internal Fortress that serves as the Fang's beating heart.[10f] It is here that the Chapter Serfs live out their lives and perform their work alongside drill yards, practice chambers, barracks, infirmaries, manufactorums, storage caverns, etc.[14]
  • Hammerhold - Subterranean Chapter Forges.[10f]
  • Borek's Seal - Guards the passages into the Underfang.[10b]
  • Underfang - Subterranean network built deep under the earth.[10b]
    • Hall of the Revered Fallen - subterranean tombs which hold the chapter Dreadnoughts.[10e]
  • Forge Hills - Hold the Space Wolves Chapter Forges, the largest of which is known as the Heart Forge.[11]
  • Tomb of Harek Ironhelm - Built in honour of the hero of the Battle of the Fang.

Name

Despite being almost universally referred to as the "Fang", the Space Wolves refer to their base simply as the "Aett".[13][15] Aett in the own language of Space Wolves literally means "clan-home", "fireplace" or "den".[4]

Conflicting Sources

In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, the Space Wolves' homeworld was referred to as "Lucan"[5] rather than Fenris as it would be called in later editions.[8]
