Torvendis is a Daemon World located at the very centre of the Maelstrom.[1f] Due to its location it has symbolic value to the Ruinous Powers.[1b]

Geography

Torvendis's geography is in a constant state of flux and changes significantly every generation. Trying to chart the planet seems to make the changing of the environment even faster.[1e] There are two prominent features on Torvendis, the Canis Mountains, a huge mountain chain where many different peoples live, and the City of Lady Charybdia, where millions live only to worship Slaanesh.[1a]

The bedrock of Torvendis itself is made of strata of bodies fallen in battle.[1a]

History

Torvendis is a former Eldar Maiden World. In the past before the emergence of the Maelstrom, Torvendis was a beautiful world with verdant forests, shimmering seas and towering cities. It was imbued with a consciousness of its own by the Eldar so it could be as beautiful and productive as possible. Then the eruption of Warp space which would become the Maelstrom happened, and the Eldar were cut off from the rest of their race. One by one the Eldar died but the world itself remained in the centre of the Maelstrom.[1i]

Since then the history of Torvendis is dominated by the legend of Arguleon Veq, a Chaos Champion who came to the planet in ages past and did battle with an individual known as "The Last".[1a] From that time on Torvendis would be ruled by a succession of many rulers including the Khornate Daemon Prince Ss'll Sh'Karr[1b], The Crimson Knights[1c], Mutander and his diseased monks[1f] and finally Lady Charybdia, Princess of Slaanesh.[1a]

During the reign of Lady Charybdia, the tribes of Torvendis united against her with the help of the returned Daemon Prince Ss’ll Sh’Karr.[1d] In the end the daemon killed Lady Charybdia.[1g] In the wake of their victory, still unsatiated Ss’ll Sh’Karr turned his attention to the united tribes of Torvendis and continued his rampage.[1h] The war between Lady Charybdia, the people of Torvendis and Ss’ll Sh’Karr was in truth the result of Arguleon Veq’s schemes to reawaken “The Last”.[1i] Through the battles Veq had intended to raise the most hateful person the world had seen. This individual could be able to release the ancient being.[1h] “The Last” was in truth the conscious world of Torvendis itself. The scheme of Arguleon Veq succeeded and "The Last" was freed. The now free Torvendis destroyed itself to deny itself from Chaos.[1i]

As a whole the history of Torvendis is too long and complex to be written down in full.[1c] It was said that any who tried to record the history of Torvendis would end up going mad.[1f]

Military

For a time the dominant power on Torvendis was Lady Charybdia. Her power was based on her Legions, disciplined warriors dedicated to the pleasure god. They were equipped with bows and spears but also had access to firearms, artillery and magic.[1d] Many of their weapons were coated in poisons.[1c] Charybdia could also call upon untold numbers of Cultists in times of war and put huge numbers of slaves onto the battle-field. In dire situations sorcerers could call upon Daemons of Slaanesh to aid Charybdia's armies in battle. A large number of Renegade Space Marines from the Violators Chapter also fought under the banner of Lady Charybdia.[1e]

The tribes of the Canis Mountains could also muster considerable strength, but nothing to compare to the Legions of Charybdia.[1c] These barbarians were primarily armed with swords and axes but also boasted several types of specialist troops.[1d]
