A trade war typically refers to a limited form of conflict between Navis Nobilite Houses.[1][2] Commercial entities, such as conflicts between manufactories or hives might use similar terminology.[3]

Overview

These conflicts were declared between rival trading factions and permitted by the Administratum under the Navigator Conventions which aimed to prevent the destruction of a Navigator House, as well as to place a limitation on the overall damage inflicted on Imperial mercantile interests. Under a Tradewar, formal declarations of intent were made which restricted permissible targets. As dictated by the terms of the trade war, it may or may not involve armed conflict, destruction of property and assets, assassination attempts, or other rules of engagement set at the onset of the trade war.[2] It is highly unusual for Navigator Houses to engage in open war with one another.[1]

The Great Navigator Houses see these wars as merely an extension of competition over a commercial interest rather then a war. Once declared, the forces of the rival factions are allowed to raid each other's shipping lines and attack important mercantile operations or even destroy equipment owned by the opposition. Assassinations are a common move in such engagements, but violence cannot extend beyond direct opposition: allies of the rival groups are theoretically immune to the conflict though it is possible for them to be dragged into the Tradewar.text-middle[Help]

These conflicts rarely last very long as they become expensive in terms of money and manpower, and more lucrative outcomes could be achieved through contractual arrangements. Furthermore, extended war results in bad relations between both sides.text-middle[Help]
