True Names are a ritualistic and metaphysical aspect of Warp beings.[1]

Daemons

Every Daemon has a true name that is used to bind it to one of the Chaos Gods. Repeating a Daemon's True Name to it binds it to the speaker. The confusion of a new master significantly disorients and weakens the Daemon, allowing it to be destroyed or banished more easily, as demonstrated by Justicar Alaric and Imperial forces when banishing Ghargatuloth on Volcanis Ultor[1].

For Daemons who were once mortals, such as Chaos Space Marines who have ascended to Daemon Prince status, their mortal names sometimes function as their True Names. During the Invasion of Ultramar, Uriel Ventris weakened the Daemon Prince M'kar by identifying him aloud as Maloq Kartho, formerly a Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers[2].

Primarchs

Primarchs are implied to have true names. On his quest to slay Horus, Leman Russ travelled into the Underverse searching for answers and encountered another version of himself, in the form of a Great Wolf. By speaking his own secret name, "a name he had never borne, but that encapsulated who he was," Russ gained power over the Great Wolf and got his answers.[3]

Daemon primarchs, like all daemons, are known to have true names. Angron's true name was once uttered by Dvorik in battle, as an example.

The Emperor

The Emperor of Mankind also has a true name, one which is said to hold great power for the one who wields it. One of the goals of the King in Yellow is to obtain the True Name of the Emperor.[4]
