Tyranid Bio-Ships invade a world
[5]
Tyranid Fleets are massive swarms of spacefaring Bio-ships which act as mobile predatory Hive Fleets, consuming everything in their path before moving on to the next world.[1a][6]
Overview
Centered around giant Hive Ships, Tyranid Fleets seek out new planets for consumption, clearing victim worlds' orbital defenses before delivering an uncountable swarm of creatures to the surface. Being entirely organic, Tyranid Bio-Ships emit no electromagnetic signatures and thus are impossible to detect until it is already too late.[1a][1b][2] They wield organic weaponry which is nonetheless formidable.[6]
Although bio-ships take on a seemingly endless variety of forms, they are broadly divided into several major classes depending on its general role in the Hive Fleet. The heart of any Hive Fleet, they are also factories producing the different species of Tyranid used in ground invasions. The ships themselves are essentially the largest species of Tyranid and are controlled by the Hive Mind. Hive Fleets consist of untold billions amounts of Bio-Ships, with only Vanguard Droneships operating independently ahead of fleets in order to scout out new worlds for consumption. Should a central Hive Ship be destroyed, the greater Tyranid fleet may fall into disarray as their synaptic connection to the Hive Mind is disrupted.[6]
In battle, Tyranid fleets rely on swarming enemies in close-quarters combat with a hail of massive claws, tentacles, Bio-Plasma, and spores to deliver boarding parties of smaller organisms. Bio-Ships lack conventional shields, and instead rely on clouds of spores and heavy chitlin armour to protect themselves from enemy fire. Besides offering protection, these massive spore clouds consisting of millions of individual organisms also are a Pandora's box of viral and acidic components that damage anything that moves through them.[6]
For FTL travel, Tyranid fleets utilize a specialized type of Bio-Ship dubbed the Narvhal.[1b]
