Greetings. I was just wondering why under the Kroot weaponry you took out the gap between the categories. It doesn't make any difference as far as I am aware which way around it goes. Oh and thanks for all the work you put in on the Codex section, its is great, much more organised :)--Jonru 10:12, 20 February 2006 (CET)
hi there,
sorry if i'm doing this wrong, i'm fairly new to all this, having never really bothered editing Wikipedia in the past. the reason that i switched the catagories round was mostly because i'm analy retentive. i was just scanning through them and it annoyed me that it came up as an alien cultre before being a type of weapon. its not a big deal at all, but i try to imagine that the reason someone's looking at this is because they are relavitely new to 40k and have just discovered something new and wish to find out more about it.
so it makes more sense (if only a little more sense) to have the weapons appear to direct you to weapons before random alien races. it would make even more sense if there was a 'kroot' catagory and their weapons connected to that rather than the generic minor alien races section, but then i'm not really experienced enough to start all that.
thanks for noticing the rulebook rearrangement. i hope its okay. once again i tried to imagine a newbie have found a rulebook of ome description but knowing nothing about it. so trying to include all rulebooks that have been published (if not actual editions) would be of some help. i was going to give them a basic skeleton and then fill them out. that would offer other users the opportuinity to add as i went along, rather than me simply writing a comprehensive description straight out.
- Your doing a great job. Actually I didn't notice that the links were flipped around, but it is definatly better the way you have put it. I never thought about it like that before. A Kroot Category would be sensible and I don't quite know why we dont have on as they are a mainstream army...I will raise it with other admin.
- Rulebook wise it is great, nothing wrong with it at all. I'm interested to see what you write about them myself, as I only have 4 gw books to my name lol. Keep up the good work!--Jonru 15:00, 20 February 2006 (CET)
Pictures and Copyright
Please make sure, that every picture uploaded by you has the correct Copyright disclaimer as they have to be removed if not. --Inquisitor S. 16:56, 20 February 2006 (CET)
sorry apologies for the lack of copyright information, i'm still new and finding my feet. what information is needed? there is a feild for copyright status, what does that mean exactly?
- The copyright status box needs something in it to show who owns the copyright. If you got the image from Gamesworkshop, then put Copyright Games Workshop. Used without permission. No challenge to their status intended. Otherwise, put the name of the company or the names of the people who made it if you can find them. If you scanned in the front covers or something similar then it is still copyright gamesworkshop like above. Don't worry! It's all part of learning to become a good editor :D--Jonru 17:03, 20 February 2006 (CET)
Always happy to help :)
Well, as for templates, at the moment anyone can make them. The German wiki (I believe) suffers from a similar problem with a lack of structuring. Granted they have a few great pages, but there is little in the way of consistancy, hence why I have recently started to make templates for use. Originally I just copied them across from the German wiki but i make them myself now as it's easier than trying to translate them hehe. If you want to make a template, go for it. If there are any problems with it then they will go in the talk page for the template and we can sort it out from there. To be honest, it isn't possible to stick too closely to the german wiki in content, but as long as they have the same basic idea behind most of the pages I think that is fine, no matter how each article (page) is laid out. To find the templates, you can either go to the main help page (Lexicanum:Help) or type in the search Lexicanum:Templates and that will give you a list of templates. To create a new one, you need to create a new link saying something like [[Template:whatever]] so that when you come to call the template its knows what to look for. If you want I can write a help file on how to use templates if that would help. As for making them, I tend to copy one and then edit the contents hehe.
Yeah, now subcategories, I asked about a Kroot one over a the german site and they said that they weren't a main enough army to warrent a subcategory. Unfortunatly we have to stick to those on the categories page for now, although personally I think kroot are main enough as they have their own army list... but then so did squats so thats out. In theory we don't want to end up with too many categories, and if we made a Kroot weapons category then we'd have to make an eldar weapons and tau weapons one and so on. You can make a category simply by calling it [[Category:whatever]] but I think we have to stick with the structure as that needs to stay the same as the german one (and technically the french one but there isn't a lot there).
Indeed it is possible. There are two ways I have found.
- Go to any old page, edit it, type in a link to the new page, press preview, then open it in a new window and press cancel on the first window. You get the new page but without the link in the old one.
- The other is to put it into the search with the correct name (ie with all the correct capitols etc.) and it should give you the option at the top of the returned search page to create that page. It will come up with something like: "No page with this exact title exists..." and you can click on the words saying this exact title (will be a link) to make the new page.
These will create what are known as 'orphaned pages' which, obviously, have no links to them. This is fine as long as they will eventually be linked to the site somehow.
Hope that answers your questions :) If there is anything else I can help with, don't hesitate to ask :)--Jonru 23:36, 22 February 2006 (CET)
Answers to your questions
1.) "who was allowed to make a Template for a catagory? is it only you (as the... er... person in charge) or can other do them." - Well basically everybody can make suggestions for templates, but only Sysops have the power to decide if the use of the template is mandatory.
2.)"i won't pretend to understand just what depth the relationship takes, so i can see how that would be an issue." Basically, everything regarding structure and handling should be the same in all LEXICANUM projects.
3.)"i was wondering about subcategories. i've noticed a couple of places where subcategories could be implemented (the Kroot as an example) (...)is it possible for me (as a contributor) to add a subcategory?" - When we started the German LEXICANUM we spend quite a lot of time debating about which and how many categories sould exist, and believe me, if you'd create a subcategory for every existing case, there would be pure chaos. Kroot are more or less Tau mercenaries which not much background like Demiurg, Hrud, Vespids etc., so for the time being they are not important enough to qualify for an category of their own. Oh, and users are not allowed to create categories.
4.)"is it possible to create a new article without having to have already pointed to it with a link?" - Of course. If you enter an article's name that doesn't exist into the "Search"-Option (lefthand), then there should appear an option to create this article.
