Varlian Device
The Varlian Device belongs to the Adeptus Mechanicus, who has gone to great lengths to keep its existence a secret outside of its upper echelons.[1] The device is a complex detonator intended to suppress psychic effects with a powerful null-pulse, making it powerful against the forces of Chaos.[3]
Overview
The origin of the device is unknown, save that it was given to the Teeth of the Cog cult by an unknown Tech-Priest. Mysterious, the individual refused to divulge any data in order to protect the identity of his masters. He was surrounded by small-insect like constructs that the Mechanicum thought may be a kind of Servitor. The secretive Magos stated that an Explorator Fleet from his Forge World had discovered the ancient core of an STC for a defensive anti-psychic mechanism, but needed a suitable testing ground to field test the device in order to measure it's effect on the Immaterial. As large as a Battle Servitor, the device's housing lay on an anti-grav bier. When the Teeth of the Cog pressed their guest on the origins of the device, he laughed and stated that it might as well have come from the Gates of Varl, a quarantined region of space known for containing ineffable knowledge and undefinable constants.[3]
During the Psychic Awakening, Magos Dominus Xu Kroll was given permission to field test the Device, as his Reclamation Fleet fought to save the Mechanicus' imperiled worlds. It was then sealed within Cargo Bay Ceti-78 aboard Kroll's command vessel, Regulus Prime, which he claimed had suffered a severe radiation leak. However, the Tech-Priest Belafont Kreeler thought Kroll was lying and became obsessed with uncovering what the cargo bay contained. This led Kreeler to repeatedly try to find ways into the cargo bay, and caused Kroll to kill the Tech-Priest in order to keep the Valerian's secrecy safe.[1]
Afterwards, Kroll's fleet came to the aid of the Forge World Ordex-Thaag, which had been invaded by Daemons. With the foes arrayed against them, the Magos Dominus had decided it is finally time to unleash the Varlian Device.[2]
