The White Scars' heraldry owes a lot of its origin to Chogorian tribal traditions, specifically from the Talskar tribe which is the origin of the white colour and scarring traditions.[1]

Pre-Primarch

Heraldry of the pioneer companies of the early V Legion[3a]

Before the discovery of Jaghatai Khan, the Vth Legion was split into various small autonomous pioneer companies. Due to this, the Vth Legion had a large variety of heraldry but typically kept the numeral of the legion and added their own unofficial insignia. [2a][3a]

Heresy-Era White Scars

After the discovery of Jaghatai Khan, he took the Vth Legion and remoulded them into a single unified force.[3b] This was achieved, in some part, to discard all of the old heraldry and take the style of Chogoris.[5a]

  • Colours: The main colour of White Scars' power armour is ivory white. This is paired with red chevron patterns whose size and location is chosen by the wearer. [2b]
  • Banding: The banding on the armour is normally gold, bronze, or sometimes enamelled red and occasionally appliqué plates of hammered bronze or copper. [2b]
  • Insignia: The tactical designations that the white scars use are Chogorian versions of imperial insignia. The White Scars can also wear the symbol of their brotherhood. In addition, they can have Chogorian script on their armour that can have a variety of meanings such as honour marks, rank, specialization, or who’s their commanding officer. [2b]
  • Panoply: The adornment on their armour can be cords made from horse hair and stamped coins of either copper or gold.[2a]
  • Notable Exceptions: The Karaoghlanlar wear a deep crimson or a dull black with shamanic charms to ward off evil spirits left after their wake.[3b][4] Another is the Ebon Keshig who wear black armour with elements of white.[3f]

Vehicles

  • Colours: The main colour of White Scars' vehicles are bone white. This is complemented by differing amounts of red, with more red on a vehicle being a way to denote status. The weapon cowlings of the vehicles are often painted black.[2c]
  • Insignia: The vehicles are always marked with the White Scars' lightning bolt symbol. In addition, they are marked with a symbol of their brotherhood. The latter can take the form of a simple glyph but can also be a complex icon. As for numbering, it is rare for a White Scars' vehicle to have numerals or tactical designations. They will however sometimes be added when working with non-Legion forces. Many crew members of the vehicle will sometimes adorn it with highly detailed motifs that can resemble murals.[2c]
