Xurunt is one of the more accessible worlds in the Screaming Vortex in the section defined as the Gloaming Worlds. A massive rocky world orbiting the star Canares, it contains several continents separated by acid seas.[1]
Its main sapient species are nomadic tribal humans named Xur who mostly worship Khorne under the name of Baphtar. There are clear signs that Xurunt was a Civilised World, but fell to a catastrophe; the current inhabitants do not talk of the "before times" out of superstitious fear.[1]
The only structures taller than hovels are eight bronze idols of a bull-headed creature the Xur call Baphtar. These are considered holy and attract those who would fight for honour before them, always to the death. After months of such ritualistic murders, sometime few and sometimes no Xur survive; those that do are treated with fear and respect.[1]
The winters of Xurunt are short, but harsh, forcing the nomads to stop warring against other. They avoid each other unless provoked and either fortify camps for the duration or migrate to the warmer equator. The warlords who campaign through and survive the winter are called Frost Fathers.[1]
Known species
The known species on Xurunt are:[1]
- Humans (Xur).
- Svartlings, a troglodyte race in the depths of the world which sometimes create metal monstrosities and teach magic to the Xur who would brave the depths and survive. It is believed they are the mutated remnants of the world's previous settlers.
- Xurunsh, Grox-like beasts used for war, burden and food.
- Onir, metal multi-legged crab-like beasts believed to be created by the svartlings.
