The Remembrancer Order was a group of poets, journalists, imagists and writers that were sent to accompany the Imperial forces during the later years of the Great Crusade, once the Emperor had returned to Terra.[1] Remembrancers continue to serve in the Era Indomitus.[13]

The term Remembrancer also appears to refer to any historian in general, even those who predate the existence of the Remembrancer Order. Several historians of M2 Terra have been described by the Imperium as remembrancers.[27][28]

History

Pre-Imperial Remembrancers

These remembrancers predate the Great Crusade, as well as predate the Imperium and the Unification Wars:

The Great Crusade

During the Great Crusade, various chroniclers and recorders had been accompanying Imperial forces as individuals, but their records were piecemeal and irregular. Following the victory at Ullanor, it was decided that a more formal and authoritative celebration of mankind's reunification was needed.[1] The Order of Remembrancers was ratified by the Council of Terra following a petition by Solomon Voss, with the aid of Askarid Sha, directly to the Emperor with the goal of forming an order of people to be the Imperium's memory of its foundation and reflect the truth of the Great Crusade.[17] The remembrancers were recruited from all levels of Terran society and from the societies of other key Imperial worlds, based on the merit of their creative gifts. Almost 4.3 million remembrancers were sent abroad in the first months following the ratification of the bill, assigned to join all the key expedition fleets active in the expanding Imperium.[1]

However they were generally disliked by both the regular troops and the Astartes. Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves, was rumoured to have groused that all remembrancers should be given weapons if they wanted to be on the front lines.[1]

When the Horus Heresy began, the Imperium issued the Edict of Dissolution which officially dissolved the Order of Remembrancers and removed the status they once held[18], although the reason for the Dissolution was kept from the former Remembrancers. Further, on the orders of Malcador, they were to be immediately sent to Terra, where they would be debriefed by his office.[11] Later on during the Siege of Terra Dorn and Malcador agreed to restore the Remembrancer Order under Kyril Sindermann. This time, the Remembrancer's symbol was the Inquisitorial "I", representing their role as interrogators as they now interviewed subjects for historical documentation.[16b]

It is not known what happened to the records they made during the Great Crusade, except that by the 41st Millennium they had been either entirely destroyed or otherwise concealed.text-middle[Help]

Post Heresy

In the 41st Millennium, the title of Remembrancer is still used, although how it came to be used again is unknown. These "modern" remembrancers appear to record the history of the Imperium, much like the remembrancers of the Great Crusade. However, unlike remembrancers of the Great Crusade, "modern" remembrancers do not appear to accompany Imperial armies into the field.[7b]

Known Remembrancers of M41 and Beyond

"The Planet Cronus, beset on all sides by tides of war. This once quiet colony became a savage battlefield. Seven armies clashed on this one world each refusing to back down. Each convinced it was in the right. A dark crusade had begun. It could only end with the total victory of one of these factions and the total defeat of all others.”

— Remembrancer Theta-Scion of the Inquisition[23][25]

Other Historians

Some historians are not explicitly referred to by the title of "Remembrancer" nor is it indicated they were inducted into the order. For the purposes of convenience, they are listed here:
