Overview
Only a handful of areas were ever cleared by the first colonists, and these had to be constantly maintained against the assault of the fast-growing flora. When the Severan Dominate established itself, the few human inhabitants of Aeyras were indifferent, eking out their miserable lives in their small, walled towns, with a constant suspicious eye on the nearby, looming jungle trees.[1]
Only when the Imperium arrived and began hunting down those loyal to the traitor Severus did Aeyras become important, a place to hide for those fleeing Imperial justice, even if it meant entering the perilous green hell. Then the Orks came, and what few human settlements that survived on Aeyras were put to the torch, their inhabitants killed or fleeing into the jungle.[1]
For the Orks, the moon was an ideal base; the harsh jungle was well suited to their physiology and a perfect place to build their strongholds. Almost too late, the Imperium recognised how deeply the Orks were taking root on Aeyras and finally moved against them to deny them this refuge.[1]
Notable Locations
The Teeming
The largest and most infamous feature of Aeyras, the Teeming is a vast jungle-filled crater formed by an ancient asteroid impact. Over time, the crater became overgrown with a tangled mass of hostile vegetation and predatory fauna. Colonists avoided it, but the Orks quickly recognised it as an ideal fortress. Today, the Teeming serves as a central Ork stronghold, shielded by dense canopy and subterranean tunnels. No human has ever entered and returned alive, leading to endless Imperial speculation about what lies within.[1b]
Scrap Forts
Around the edges of the Teeming, Orks constructed dozens of crude strongholds from scavenged materials, often incorporating the bones of Aeyras’ colossal jungle beasts. These forts serve as listening posts, defensive strongholds, and access points to the Teeming’s depths. Despite their crude design, they are heavily fortified and linked by tunnels, making them difficult to assault.[1b]
Switchback Climb
The most direct approach into the Teeming is via the Switchback Climb, a dangerous series of narrow ridges and paths winding up the jungle cliffs. The Orks have trapped this route with spikes, explosives, and deadfalls, making it a lethal gauntlet for any attempting passage.[1b]
Rotting Falls
A colossal, vegetation-choked waterfall where the river from the Teeming cascades into a swamp below. Filled with debris, toxic refuse, and decaying jungle matter, the falls have become a dumping ground for Ork waste and industrial byproducts, further poisoning the region.[1b]
Hellen Highlands
A vast swamp surrounding the Teeming, stretching for kilometres in every direction. Traversable only by boat or air transport, the Highlands are treacherous wetlands crawling with predators. The early colonists relied on the region as a food source, but it has since become one of the most dangerous areas of Aeyras.[1b]
Shifting Fens
Within the Highlands lie the Shifting Fens, unstable islands of jungle trees that float freely across the swamp. Treacherous to traverse, they drift unpredictably, often carrying unwary travellers into Ork traps or ambushes.[1b]
The Deeps
A region of sinkholes and flooded caverns hidden within the Highlands. The Deeps contain strange currents and whirlpools capable of dragging boats and men under without warning. Local superstition paints the Deeps as cursed, and they are avoided even by most of the native population.[1b]
Camp Blackfen
An Imperial Guard encampment established to secure supply lines near the Fallow River. Initially a small outpost, it has grown into a fortified base as reinforcements poured into Aeyras. Despite this, supply chains remain fragile, and the camp is under constant threat from Ork raids and the hostile terrain.[1b]
