Overview
The Karacallia system contains an unusually high number of gas giants, many of which harbour resources valuable to the Adeptus Mechanicus in the construction of Warp drives. Despite these resources, Karacallia’s remote location, distant from the nearest forge world has made large-scale exploitation perilous, especially with the outbreak of war in the region.[1]
Its population is scattered across more than three dozen satellites orbiting these gas giants, descended from colonists sent five centuries ago to provide manpower for resource extraction. While the population has grown considerably, the scheme to fully exploit the system’s resources never reached fruition, leaving the system isolated and vulnerable.[1]
History
Initial colonisation began approximately five centuries ago with settlers dispatched to establish a permanent population capable of supporting industrial expansion. Although the population flourished numerically, the lack of adequate infrastructure and distance from Imperial supply lines led to stagnation and isolation.[1]
When Severus XIII declared his rebellion against the Imperium, Karacallia’s large, densely populated worlds became fertile recruiting grounds for the Severan Dominate. The isolation of the system and its accumulated grievances made it easy for Severus to incite rebellion.[1]
Since the outbreak of the war, the Imperium has launched more than thirty assaults on Karacallia. At least as many have been conducted by the Orks within the region. To date, none have dislodged Severus’ forces, who fight with near-fanatical determination. Numerous Imperial Guard regiments have been committed to the system, achieving victories on individual satellites, but with each loss the Dominate quickly regains ground. The result is a grinding, attritional conflict marked by repeated assaults, heavy casualties, and minimal long-term gains.[1]
The fighting has been compared to an "island-hopping" campaign, as Imperial and Dominate forces battle for possession of countless moons, satellites, and planetoids. The surfaces of these worlds are craters, corpse-fields, and toxic wastelands, scoured by the Imperium’s weapons and poisoned by Severus' lethal gases. Rarely does a world remain in one faction’s control for more than a few months before being seized back in turn.[1]
