T'au Sept
| This article is about the System of Governance; for the Sept of the T'au Homeworld, see T'au (Planet). |
A Sept, also known as a realm, is a star system or a series of star systems colonised by the T'au Empire; this includes all colonised planets, moons, and holdings such as orbital stations, and void structures within the system.[10a][10b]
Overview
Each Sept is named after its Sept World, also known as Prime Planet or Capital Planet, from which the Sept is governed and is denoted by a different Sept Symbol and colour for each, often related to the unique culture of each Sept.[10b][11]
Tau Septs are managed by an Elemental Council. This includes representatives from the five Tau Castes (Ethereal, Fire, Air, Water, and Earth) as well as a 6th observer seat that goes to a prominent member of an Auxiliary race for an "outside perspective". However final word on the Council ultimately goes to the Ethereal representative.[22]
T'au Septs
T'au Septs are generally created during the T'au's Spheres of Expansion, and their status is often considered in relation to other Septs of their Sphere.[10b]
Homeworld
- T'au, homeworld of the Tau. Capital and spiritual, political, cultural, and administrative centre of the Tau empire. Its citizens are considered especially learned and wise.[10b]
First Sphere Sept
The Tau homeworld and the First Sphere Septs are of major importance and form the hub of the empire,[10b] established during the First Sphere of Expansion (502.M37-936.M38)[10c]
- T'au'n - First offworld colony. Tau from this world are considered to be pioneers.[7a]
- Bork'an - Centre of learning and academia.[7a]
- D'yanoi - Having been isolated for a time from the empire, its inhabitants are considered somewhat rustic and backwards.[7a]
- Dal'yth - Cosmopolitan and trader-friendly.[7a]
- Fal'shia - Centre of technological development. Tau from here are considered great problem solvers.[7a]
- Sa'cea - A military centre. This sept has a very high proportion of very disciplined and honourable Fire Warriors.[7a]
- Vior'la - A major military centre of the empire. Its Fire Warriors are considered especially aggressive and skilled.[7a]
Second Sphere Sept
The Septs of the Second Sphere were established during the Second Sphere of Expansion (018.M39 - ~700.M41)[10c], which was launched by Aun'Wei across previously unreachable regions of space and came to an end when the Tau crossed the Damocles Gulf and reached the borders of the Imperium.[10b]
- Au'taal - A beautiful sept, whose citizens are considered easygoing and often lazy.[7b]
- Elsy'eir - Known for its poetry and artwork. Its citizens are considered intellectuals and well-respected for their creativity.[7b]
- Ke'lshan - Has suffered several raids by several alien races. Tau from this sept have grown mistrustful, solemn, taciturn, unfriendly and sometimes openly hostile to alien races. Ke'lshan was invaded by Hive Fleet Gorgon and played an essential role in stopping it.[6][7b]
- N'dras - Abandoned for unclear reasons. Its remaining inhabitants are regarded as untrustworthy, quick-tempered, and of brooding countenance.[7b]
- Tash'var - Raided several times by Orks and pirates. Its people are regarded as tenacious, hardy, practical and courageous.[7b]
- T'olku (or Tol'ku) - Known for the skill of its Ethereal diplomats.[7b]
- Vash'ya - Seems to be primarily inhabited by members of the Air Caste.[7b]
Farsight Enclaves
The Farsight Expedition (~750.M41-760.M41) was sent into the gulf fifty years later, resulting in the Farsight Enclaves – not themselves Septs, but nevertheless Second Sphere worlds of the T'au'va.[25]
Third Sphere Sphere Sept
The Third Sphere of Expansion was convened on 977.997.M41.[1][2][3] Commander Shadowsun was placed in command, and secured three new Septs for the Tau Empire. In the Zeist Campaign of 999.M41, Imperial forces counterattacked against the expanding Third Sphere, drawing the Third Sphere to a temporary halt.
- Fi'rios whose pioneers are recognised for a tenacious refusal to accept defeat, tempered by a stoic acceptance of the price all must pay in the furtherance of the Greater Good.[7c]
- Ksi'm'yen's colonists seem to be associated with luck, subtlety and opportunistic subterfuge.[7c]
- Mu'gulath Bay, previously known as the Imperial Hive World of Agrellan. (Destroyed)[7c]
Fifth Sphere Sphere Sept
The fleet meant for the Fourth Sphere of Expansion was thought lost for years before contact was reestablished with the survivors. No Septs are known to have been established during this sphere of expansion.[7d] Thought lost for decades, the ill-fated Fourth Sphere of Expansion reestablished contact with the Tau Empire beyond the wormhole known as the Startide Nexus.
[Help]
To meet the remaining elements of the Fourth Sphere fleet, a Fifth Sphere of Expansion was launched in M42 and rapidly, worlds on the other side of the rifts have been colonized.[7e]
Known Fifth Sphere Septs include:
Septs Without Spheres
Some Septs that are not credited to a specific Sphere of Expansion; some have been formed individually, through opportunity or a smaller-scale invasion. Some may not even be Septs, but rather a splinter of another Sept.
- Dy'aketh — formerly the Imperial world of Drachenvol[7f]
- Hul'aan[7g]
- Uan'Voss[20]
- Velk'Han – contested by the Imperial Achilus Crusade[13a]
Other T'au Worlds
Tau Colonies
Besides the populous Septs, there are also sparsely populated colonies. Only a few names are known. Locations of unstated status are put here as well.
Colonization is the main way the T'au expand their Empire outside of war against hostile worlds. Their decision to colonize a world or not depends on if it can be an asset to the Empire and if the colony can cause the system it is in to prosper. Often the worlds selected are full of hostile lifeforms or barely habitable for the T'au.[23] The colonists will have Fire Warriors to protect them though[24] and over years of hard work, their worlds will become valuable resources for the T'au Empire. These colonies will then eventually turn into cities, that will serve as waystations for the T'au's further expansion efforts.[23]
Known T'au Colonies include:
- Arkunasha[18a]
- Atari Vo[18b]
- Cano'var[18b] — Lost during the Second Sphere of Expansion to "robotic creatures" with "strange energy weapons"

Annexed Worlds
During the First Sphere of Expansion, the homeworlds and colonies of the Kroot and the Vespid were also incorporated into the Tau empire. Notice that these star systems are not considered Septs. In addition, there are an unknown number of former Imperial worlds in the T'au Empire, such as T'ros. Some or all of which might still have a Human population.
- Isla'su, homeworld of the Greet
- Roksh XVI — site of a secret Tau listening post, the planet was part of the Roksh system that was home to the Rokshashi Wealthweb merchant guild before the entire system was consumed by Hive Fleet Gorgon in 689902.M41.[6]
- Sha'galudd, homeworld of the Nagi
- Vespid, homeworld of the Vespid.
- Kroot worlds
- Akchan-Kur, Kroot world
- Caroch, Kroot world
- Pech, homeworld of the Kroot. According to the maps, there are eight star systems inhabited by the Kroot (including Pech). We know the name of only one, Krath, where the Tau first encountered the Kroot.
- Queh-quih, described as a "Kroot Sept"[17a]
- Yuun'chen, Kroot world
Artefact Worlds
Three Artefact worlds are located within the borders of the Tau empire whereupon, ancient artefacts of unknown origin have been discovered. These worlds are considered holdings of the empire,[13b] though is not known if these worlds have Tau colonies at all.
- Arthas Moloch, a dead world where Commander Farsight found the Dawn Blade.
- Landfall - Discovery of an ancient Syrshin star chart here led to a means to travel from this planet to what would become Sept Velk'Han in the Jericho Reach.[13b]
