Axe
An Axe is a specialized version of utility axe used as a primitive close combat weapon.[1]

Overview
The axe sports a brutal blade, used both as a tool and weapon. While it generally does not have the reach of a sword and lacks its ability to parry away blows, a strike from an axe will generally create a more lethal effect when it lands, ripping apart flesh and shattering bone with ease.[1][2] Axes are usually found on feudal or Feral worlds, but many heretics also value their simplicity and brutality.[3] Sometimes issued to planetary defenders during trench warfare, light axes are used not just for clearing paths and chopping firewood on long campaigns, but also for hacking away at invaders during desperate close actions.[Fn] Some Inquisitors equip their strike teams with tactical axes due to their effectiveness during small melee actions.[5f] Civilian uprisings often utilise axes, hammers, knives, sticks and stones due to their availability to the working class.[5e]
Patterns
Combat Axes
The humble combat axe is an unfashionable but effective weapon, its weighted head often doing far more damage on the swing than the blade itself.[5a]
Tactical Axes
Derived from ancient hunting weapon designs, tactical axes are simple and cheap to produce, and deadly in the hands of a trained warrior.[5d]
