Blackmanes
The Blackmanes are one of the twelve active Great Companies of the Space Wolves[1a], second only to the Champions of Fenris in size.[12b]

Overview
The Blackmanes are often granted the honour of leading a planetary invasion, seeding a world with packs of Reivers and Drop Pod assaults.[1a] They number at least two hundred warriors strong, in defiance of the Codex Astartes. However Lord Commander Roboute Guilliman looks the other way to this deviation due to the needs of Mankind.[12b]
According to Fenrisian myth, the Blackmanes take their title from the deity Blackmane, the most fearsome lieutenants of the wolf-god Morkai. It is said that Blackmane's howl called the souls of the dead from their resting places. The legends tell that Leman Russ defeated the Blackmane and skinned the evil creature. Blackmane's cursed spirit still calls to the dead, but thanks to their Primarch it no longer has the power to summon them to the world of the living. All the Blackmaned Wolves that still roam Asaheim are said to be his offspring.[12b]
