Publication History

2001 : Cityfight

Codex: Cityfight was a Warhammer 40,000 supplement focusing on urban warfare. It was released in 2001 during the 3rd Edition of the game. It provided players with rules and guidelines to conduct battles in city terrain, offering a variety of scenarios and missions for city-based conflicts. This supplement added an immersive layer of urban combat, requiring tactical adaptation and creative terrain building.[1]

2006 : Cities of Death

Warhammer 40,000: Cities of Death was an expansion released during the 4th Edition of Warhammer 40,000. It added rules for playing in an urban environment. It dealt primarily with combat in cover, combat between different heights of terrain, and objectives that were catered to an urban setting.[2a]

Cities of Death was designed to add on the standard Warhammer 40000 rules, but not change how any of them work. This made it very different to Cityfight, which required players to learn new games rules. The design was focused on providing a set of special Cityfighting missions, designed to work with a regular 40k army.[2a]

This expansion was compatible with the 5th[3] and 6th[4] Editions of Warhammer 40,000.

Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition

This game mode was reintroduced in the 8th Edition' Advanced Rules. 4 stratagems and a missions were available for this mode of play.[5] These rules were an optional add-on to theme player's battles and add more variety to their games. In these types of games, infantry units will thrive, while others will find their paths across the battlefield more limited.[5]

The game mode was expanded in Chapter Approved 2018 with additional abilities, Warlord Traits (below), Stratagems (pg 32-35) and Battlezones (pg 36-37) that reflect the tactics deployed when playing a Cities of Death mission. New narrative rules such as a new, deeper cover system, options for concealed deployment, battlefields infested with xenos beasts, were introduced.[6]

The rules for Cities of Death were also compiled and expanded in the Warhammer 40,000: Urban Conquest expansion.[7]
