Crucible was a world of the Imperium close to the Great Rift.[1a]
History
Crucible was a rich world where the miserable population toiled in darkness extracting precious minerals and Promethium refineries. Sometime early in M42, Crucible was invaded by the forces of the Emperor's Children under Daemon Primarch Fulgrim and Knight-Commander Marduk Tamaris. The world was defended by Cadian Shock Troopers, Kasrkin, local PDF as well as Black Templars force under Castellan Garrian and Emperor's Champion Johannes Berengar.[1a][1b]
Thanks to the skilful defence of Crucible's defensive citadel by the Black Templars and Cadians, the Emperor's Children took unexpectedly heavy losses in the assault through the sacrifice of Castellan Garrian. Fulgrim became displeased with the situation, leading to the Emperor's Children Sorcerer Mauvais and Tamaris deciding to destroy the Citadel's water supply.[1c] Faced with a desperate situation in the city, the Emperor's Children launched a renewed assault led by Fulgrim himself.[1d] In the final bloody stand the last remaining Imperial defenders were overrun or joined the Emperor's Children, while Berengar was killed by Tamaris.[1e]
In the aftermath of Crucible's fall, Fulgrim was declared king to a jubilant group of citizens that had converted to Chaos as well as his own warriors. Though Tamaris was declared overseer of Crucible, he feared that Fulgrim would soon lose interest and move on.[1f]
