Johannes Berengar was an Emperor's Champion of the Black Templars.[1a]

Serving under Castellan Garrian, Berengar is subject to many prophetic visions including that of the return of his Primarch Rogal Dorn as the two battled a sea of Daemons. Guided by Berengar's visions of a resurgent Daemon Primarch Fulgrim, Garrian and the Black Templars arrive at the Imperial world of Crucible just as it is about to be invaded by the Emperor's Children Perfecti warband led by Fulgrim and Marduk Tamaris.[1a]

In the subsequent battle for Crucible, Berengar is a key loyalist commander and assumes total command after the death of Garrian.[1b] Fulgrim orders that whoever can bring him the head of Berengar will be his personal champion, and in the final stages of the battle the Black Templar battles Tamaris after refusing Fulgrim's offer to be his champion instead.[1c] Berengar was gaining the advantage against Tamaris, but the intervention of Fulgrim and Noise Marines drives the warrior back long enough for the Tamaris warrior to decapitate the Emperor's Champion with his own Black Sword Filius Lux.[1d]
