Culcis
Culcis was a Guardsman of the Volpone 50th during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.[1a][1b]
Biography
While still a Trooper, Culcis was wounded in action on Nacedon and was left behind in a farmhouse being used as a field hospital when Imperial forces were forced to retreat from Lohenich. However, a unit of the Tanith First and Only discovered the wounded Volpone and their Chief Medical Officer, Tolin Dorden, refused to abandon men in need of medical assistance. The Tanith ended up leaving ten men behind to defend the farmstead and some of the less-injured Volpone, including Culcis, supported them. Together, they were able to survive the night against attacks by Chaos Cultists until the Crusade forces pushed back and reclaimed the land that they had lost the previous day.[1a]
Culcis later distinguished himself on Vandamaar, earning a medal for his valorous actions.[1b][2] This, combined with favourable reports from both Dorden and his commander, Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, resulted in Culcis being promoted to the Volpone 50th's elite Tenth Brigade. He later saw action as part of Inquisitor Lilith's bodyguard detail on Monthax.[1b]
By the time of the Siege of Vervunhive, Culcis had been promoted to the rank of Major. There, he led a detachment of the Tenth Brigade defending the walls of Vervunhive during the first Zoican storm of the city. Culcis's force held the Sondar Gate against thousands of Zoican storm-troops, despite being reduced to hand-to-hand combat and suffering 70% losses; this included his immediate subordinate Sergeant Mantes, who sacrificed himself to blow up a Zoican siege engine. Culcis himself lost a hand in the fighting.[2]
