Ghostwind
The Ghostwind is an empty dimension of darkness [1b] that the Necrons' Flayed Ones innately use to transport themselves to different locations within the Galaxy.[1c] A small number of Crypteks have also learned to enter it as well.[1a]
Description
It is thought by some Crypteks to be the lowest metadimension and a place where reality is an impossible concept. Composed of a vast darkness that is believed to lay parallel to the Galaxy,[1a] the Ghostwind is completely empty. It contains no starlight or noise at all and the dimension's temperature hovers close to absolute zero. Those who enter the Ghostwind do so quickly and without any displacement of energy afterwards.[1b] However while the Flayed Ones can easily do so,[1c] uninfected Necrons require other means. They will need Cryptek-created equipment to enter the dimension themselves or a ship can enter it, if a Cryptek installs the protocols to do so in a ship's Autonomous Spirit.[1a] The Ghostwind also impacts those who enter it differently. Flayed Ones can enter the dimension innately[1c] and afterwards, they merely visualize where they want to be. This results in an image of their destination appearing in the distance in front of them, but the Flayed Ones must then use the Ghostwind to move towards it. The process is described as the Flayed Ones pulling themselves and their destination together, while moving through a tunnel, surrounded by deep rock. This process can be used to move elsewhere within the dimension or to exit the Ghostwind into the Galaxy itself.[1d]
For Necrons uninfected by the Flayer Virus, the process of entering the Ghostwind is vastly different. They must first enter their destination into their equipment or ships before they can enter the dimension. The location must also exist within the Galaxy for the process to work and the journey will not end, until the Necron ships exit the Ghostwind upon reaching their destination.[1a] The Necrons' higher castes will immediately feel ill at ease upon entering the dimension, as its very nature is anathema to them. The Ghostwind almost causes them to experience feelings of fear. Also while the Necrons' weaponry will work within the dimension, anything relying on the species' interstitial transmission technology will not. This impacts the use of the species' translation protocols, so while the Necrons can visibly see their other ships in the Ghostwind, the species must use their transports to travel to them. The Necrons must also use radio transmissions to reliably communicate with other ships within the dimension. Most importantly, however, the dimension prevents the species from being able to use their ability to recall their damaged bodies for reconstruction. Because of this, any Necron that is destroyed within the Ghostwind will suffer a permanent death.[1b]
Despite its many drawbacks, ships traveling through the dimension, even with damaged drives, will move at incredible speeds. This allows them to reach their destination more quickly than other means of travel available to the Necrons.[1b]
