The Greater Republic was a large human empire that encompassed numerous Systems within the Occluda Noctis during the Age of Strife.[1a]
History
While it contained many worlds, only a few of them featured beacons that were installed by the Greater Republic. These beacons not only allowed their worlds to maintain contact with each other, but also could sense passing space ships within a few hundred light years around them. In time, though, the Greater Republic collapsed and was succeeded by the Second Republic until it collapsed as well. While no longer united, the former worlds of the Second Republic still contained the Greater Republic's beacons and one on Primeworld gave rise to the Triumvirate of Garl.[1a]
This much smaller empire would use the beacon to maintain contact with other former Republic worlds, but as generations went by these beacons became silent. This led the Triumvirate to believe they were the only humans that remained in the galaxy, until the Imperium began the Great Crusade. Interstellar transmissions from the Imperium reached the Triumvirate's worlds and its population was eager to join this new human empire. However, it would not be until several years later, when a warship of the Night Crusade finally neared the Triumvirate's worlds. The small empire made contact and soon the Imperial Fists' Phalanx arrived at Primeworld and the Triumvirate eagerly joined the Imperium.[1a]
The Triumvirate's Compliance proved to be a boon for the Imperial Fists, as they gained access to the former empire's stellar charts. These were gained when the Triumvirate was part of the Greater Republic and, while the information was at least a thousand years out of date, the maps stretched nearly two hundred light years towards the Occluda Noctis' core systems. At least a score of these once belonged to the Greater Republic and the Imperial Fists made these Systems a priority to visit next.[1b]
