Overview
The planet is locked in a state of perpetual winter and the local conditions are unforgiving. Nonetheless, Hishrea possesses valuable natural resources that are exported across its sub-sector.[1b]
History
In early M42, Hishrea, like the rest of the Argovon System, came under attack from vast armies of Necrons. Local defenders were backed up by Indomitus Crusade Task Force XI trying to reclaim the system in the Argovon Campaign, part of the wider War for the Pariah Nexus.[1a][1b][1c]
Although the majority of the task force was committed to the fighting on Argolish and Argovon itself, a detachment of Task Force XI led by Admiral Archibalda Tansk was sent to Hishrea.[1b][1c] Despite initial successes[1c] (including the Assault on the Nurtheos Shore, which saw the Imperials destroy two of the Necrons' Dolmen Gates[1e]), Necron reinforcements continued to arrive on Hishrea.[1d][1e] The sheer weight of numbers meant that Tansk was forced to withdraw from Hishrea. She came under harsh criticism for her actions[1c], and was eventually executed by Task Force Command.[1d]
Geography
Hishrea is a very cold world with large oceans several miles deep.[1b]
The planet possesses a number of large hive cities, most of which are built over thermal vents isolated from the rest of Hishrea's surface by icy mountain ranges. The planet's northern pole is ringed by a series of cryovolcanoes called Death's Collar.[1b]
Notable Locations
- Death's Collar[1b]
- Hive Baduen[1c]
- Hive Oadunn — Wiped out by a frostwyrm swarm.[1b]
- Hive Scadi[1e]
- Hive Zisha[1e]
- Midthadian Ice Caves[1c]
- Nurtheos Shore[1e]
- Sajan Isthmus[1e]
Native Wildlife
In addition to the dangers posed by the conditions, Hishrea is inhabited by numerous species of dangerous wildlife, including varieties of megafauna that dwell in the deep oceans.[1b]
Fauna
- Blodwhals — Ocean creatures.[1b]
- Delphinidae — Ocean creatures.[1b]
- Equines[1a]
- Frostwyrms — Swarming subterranean creatures that can reduce a fully grown human to a skeleton in seconds. Have persisted despite a number of attempts to wipe the species out.[1b]
- Helikoprioids — Ocean creatures.[1b]
- Livyatahn — Ocean creatures.[1b]
- Steelhide Sharks — Ocean creatures.[1b]
Society
By the time of the Argovon Campaign, Hishrea's Planetary Governor was Lugiphron Thror XIV.[1a]
Hishrea's hives were populated with labourers that work the planet's gas mines.[1b]
Meanwhile the oceans of Hishrea supported the Oseann Clans: nomads who lived their entire lives aboard flotillas of armed steamships hunting the lifeforms that live in the oceans, in particular the helikoprioids.[1b]
Known Clans
- Black-fin[1e]
- Blue-fang — Wiped out by the Necrons.[1e]
- Iron-dorsal[1e]
- Razor-wing[1e]
- Sharp-beak[1c]
- Swift-tooth[1c]
Military
Hishrea contributes regiments for the Astra Militarum (one of the world's primary exports). These include the infantry of the Hishrean Harpoonists, armoured formations called the Hishrean Avalanchers and artillery batteries called the Hishrean Powdermen.[1a]
In addition, Hishrea possesses a Planetary Defence Force, made up of units of Hishrean Mountainmen and Hishrean Floestriders.[1a]
Religion
The Oseann Clans believed that the Emperor of Mankind is like an enormous sea monster that rules the "Great Sky Oseann", who is too strong and smart to be hunted by any man.[1b]
