"Today we can but begin what must surely be a long and arduous task - to assess and describe the Steel Daemons, to confront them and ultimately to bring them to battle. We can but add guesses to our too scant knowledge, to reconstruct their weaponry, their fighting methods, their strengths and vulnerabilities. All this we must do, quickly, lest we perish without ever recognizing our peril."

Inquisitor Hoth, on the emerging threat of the Necrons[3b]

Hoth was an Inquisitor, who wrote the Second Book of Admonitions and was an expert on the Necrons.[1]

Hoth's investigation of the raids on Sanctuary 101 and Adric IV would play its part in the Imperium's first true awareness of the Necron threat. He extolled that the greatest threat to the Imperium lay in those known only as the Ancients.[1]

Overview

In late M41, Hoth was one of the Inquisitors assigned to analyse the aftermath of the Massacre at Sanctuary 101. He had the corpses of the Adepta Sororitas who had died in the attack removed for study and, as of 909.M41, had still not returned the bodies to their Order.[2]

He would also interrogate Brother Vielle, last survivor of the Ecclesiarchal hermitage on Adric IV, which had been destroyed by the Necrons. Under torture, Vielle described the harrowing experience before passing out.[3a]
