Born the son of Necromunda's Planetary Governor Gerontius Helmawr and Inquisitor Heleana Jerico (which she later described as "just one of the many disagreeable things one has to do for the greater good of the Imperium"[1]), Kal left the luxury of the spire for the life of a bounty hunter in the Underhive.[1]
As well as hunting those with bounties on their heads, Jerico often has a bounty on his own due to his unorthodox methods, leading as often as not to trouble finding him. He resolves these situations using his trademark debonair swashbuckling style, relying on quick wits and his good luck more than brute strength.[1]
Most recently, Jerico has been summoned uphive a number of times to fulfil various missions for his family.[3]
The Noble Spryer
Kal Jericho and his partners, Yolanda Catallus and Scabbs, were on a mission to capture a rogue ganger when they spot an agent of the crimelord Nemo. The bounty ended in an explosive mess, leading them to discover a new bounty: a vampire that has been killing and draining victims across the Underhive. They eventually discovered that the "vampire" in question was actually a blood-sucking Spyrer. Meanwhile, Kal was kidnapped and brought before Obidiah Clein, who told him that the Spyrer was his half-brother Armand and that a noble family hunting team was sent to kill him.[10a]
Kal, alongside Obidiah's aid Valtin, descended into the Hive City when the group discovered the noble hunting team in combat with House Escher gangers.[10b] As Yolanda and Scabbs were hunted by the Escher gangers, Kal and Valtin got word that Armand was nearby, and they descended on the area alongside the Escher Wildcats. After a chaotic free-for-all, Kal's team and the Wildcats agreed to an alliance to take down Armand.[10c] This combined force engaged Armand, but the Spyrer managed toe scape while kidnapping Valtin. It is eventually revealed that Armand contains a data cartridge which has the brain and memories of the last royal chamberlain, making him an object of interest for Obidiah Clein.[10d]
Valtin learned from her captor, Armand, that he intended to use the stolen brain to expose the corruption of House Helmawr, allowing for a "cleansing" of the family. Kal and his allies then arrived and confronted Armand and tried to reason with him, but the Spryer refused to listen. In the final battle Armand was killed and Valtin was gravely wounded as the brain was taking by an agent working for Nemo.[10e] With Armand dead, Kal and his group escaped from the Escher gangers and noble mercenaries, intercepting Nemo's agent and acquiring his stolen data. Kal however decided that giving the cartridge to his father would be a mistake and gives it to a healed Valtin. Valtin was able to use the brain to outmaneuver their rivals and secure their place as heir apparent and a House reformer.[10f]
Cardinal Crimson
As Kal, Yolanda, and Scabbs take up a new bounty to pay off their gambling debt. The target is the powerful ganger Jobe Francks, who was being hunted by Cardinal Crimson, a powerful Redemptionist leader. As Francks avoided assassins with the help of a House Cawdor gang, Kal Jerico was confronted by Nemo and was forced to work for him to get his Cyber-Mastiff, Wotan, back.[11a] Kal, Yolanda, and Scabbs then came under attack from a group of debt-seeking Goliath gangers, but were aided by their Wildcat House Escher allies as well as Francks, who demonstrated his psychic abilities.[11b]
As Francks sought to learn why he is being hunted, Kal was able to track him down as Goliath and Cardinal Crimsons Redemptionists close in at a slave camp. Scabbs, having since been kidnapped and put to work in the camp, then led a slave revolt as chaos breaks out amidst the bounty hunters. The violence is all centered around a single glowing corpse. As Francks fled the assassins, Kal was captured by the Cardinal Crimson's men and tortured. The Cardinal offered Kal a deal: kill Francks and he would clear his debt. Kal was able to escape without overtly accepting the deal,[11c] and the "miracle body" at the center of the affair and slave revolt was revealed to be Syris Bowdie, Francks psychic gang leader. Kal was then guided by Franck's powers, arriving and helping the slaves against the Cardinal Crimson's Redemptionists.[11d]
Kal then learned that Francks gang was a threat to the Cardinal Crimson slave operation, and confronted the Redemptionist leader. During their battle, both realize they were being manipulated by Nemo. In a fit of rage, the Cardinal was able to throw Francks off a cliff. In a final confrontation Kal, now with Francks psychic memories, caused the dome to collapse on the chaotic battle below. Kal was able to use Franck's final gift to find Wotan..[11e]
Royal Wedding
Still recovering from the Cardinal Crimson affair, Kal received a message delivering shocking news: that he is to be married to his partner Yolanda Catallus, who is a duchess of House Catallus. Dragged off by House Helmawr Royal Guards[12a], he learned that his father the Lord Helmawr is comatose and barely clinging to life from a prior assassination attempt. There was a package of advanced medicine to save him, but was stolen by the mysterious crimeboss Vandal Feg. Kal was able to get away and decided to find the package himself and learned that Vandal Feg was working with Nemo, who was also pursuing the package.[12b]
Kal confronts his old colleague Valtin Schemko, who revealed that Kal's wedding to Yolanda is in three days and he must find the package by then to avoid a civil war within the House. An assassin, Markel Bobo, was also hired by another House guard Hermond Kauderer to kill Kal and expose the greater conspiracy. Kal and Scabbs decided to find Nemo, believing he had the package.[12c] The duo then allied with Captain Katerin of the Helmawr Royal Guard and were able to track down Nemo's lair and Vandal Feg. Battling through the guards, Kal outwitted Katerin and found Feg first, offering him help to escape if he helped him retrieve the package. Feg accepted but quickly escaped and revealed he had had the package all along.[12d] Feg, fleeing with the package, was nonetheless captured by Kal and Scabbs, who knew he would double-cross them. They recovered the package, but were confronted by Nemo and his men and would have been killed had it not been for the intervention of Wotan, Kal's Cyber-Mastiff.[12e]
Having retrieved the medicine for his father's recovery, Kal and Yolanda's forced wedding nonetheless carried on as planned. However the ceremony was interrupted by his cousin, Ramone, who revealed himself being behind the conspiracy. However the wedding had itself been a ruse by the Helmawr Household guard in order to draw out the true conspirators, and Lord Helmawr was revealed to be cured and awake. Chaos erupted across the ceremonial hall and Bobo reappeared to kill Ramone with a poison dart. As the violent dies down, Kal and Yolanda realize that they are, in fact, married.[12e]
Sinner's Bounty
As Kal, his "wife" Yolanda, and Scabbs discuss recent troubles, they were attacked by an enormous Mutant Slabscale. With the help of Wotan the group are able to kill Slabscale and flee, taking refuge in a watering settlement named Pipefall. They then discuss their intent to recover from their recent misfortunes by finding the dangerous Redemptionist Desolation Zoon, who had a huge bounty on his head.[13a] Traveling through the Pipefall, Scabbs was angered by the treatment of Mutants and Abhumans by local House Cawdor guards. This led to Scabbs freeing a fellow Ratskin woman named Amanute, which caused Kal's team to become embroiled in a brawl between Cawdor and Mutant and Beastmen gangers under Gor Half-Horn.[13b]
Allying with Half-Horn against House Cawdor, the group managed to escape on a ferry and learned the Beastmen bounty hunter was also seeking Zoon. Meanwhile, the Pastor Goeth learned of what Kal's group had done in Pipefall and informed his spymaster Nemo about the situation. Nemo revealed that he had placed a tracking device in Wotan and knows all of Kal's movements.[13c] As they fight through sump-beasts on the ferry with fellow bounty hunters, the group was able to arrive in Down Town and learned that Zoon was at the southern gate.[13d] Traveling to the southern gate and pursuing Zoon, the group fought off rival bounty hunter bikers and learned the Redemptionist was organising local militia against a massing mutant attack under Queen Wart.[13e]
With the help of Amanute, who can control the horrifying beasts of the tunnels of Perdition, the group was able to move through the mutant lair in their pursuit of Zoon.[13f] The group was eventually infiltrated Perdition and were ambushed by Zoon's men, but Kal was able to negotiate a temporary alliance to fight off the mutants.[13g] The bounty hunters and Redemptionists defend Perdition against the Mutant hordes of Queen Wart, and Zoon is slain when his hauler exploded.[13h] The defenders are only saved thanks to Scabb and Amanute, who managed to rally the local Ratskins against the rest of the mutants. In the aftermath, the Ratskins have earned a place in the town and were now free.[13i]
Meanwhile, Nemo's agent Belladonna revealed she was able to use the chaos to escape with a black cylinder containing a Caryatid. The spymaster revealed he was working for an Inquisitor, Jena Orechiel, who ordered that Nemo continue to monitor Kal.[13j]
Equipment
Ambidextrous, Jerico wields two laser-sighted dueling laspistols as his trademark and carries a trusty sabre. He also uses photon flash flares and frag grenades to escape from unpleasant situations.[4]
Associates & Enemies
His associates include his half-Ratskin sidekick Scabbs[1i] and more recently his half-sister Merelda's Cyber-Mastiff Wotan[1i] and former enemy and fellow uphiver turned bounty hunter Yolanda Catallus.[1g] He has been a member of the bounty hunter gang Kal Jerico's Profiteers[7] and the outcast gang Kal’s Heroes.[8]
The more ambivalent spy-master Nemo has called in a favour for saving Jerico's life on one occasion, while also sanctioning his lieutenant (and Jerico's enemy) Cheka to kill him. The faceless Nemo is Kal's most frequent enemy.[10a] Other enemies include the insane Redemptionist Cardinal Crimson[11a], escaped Pit Slave Vandal Feg,[9] and Chrono-gladiator Krieger Thrax.
