The Misery IX colony has existed for 8 centuries, originally being established as an offshoot of a Mechenko Dynasty enterprise in the subsector that ultimately failed to produce any profits. The colony is to all intents and purposes independent, and the High Councillor of its ruling body is treated, if not formally recognised, as an Imperial Commander by subsector authorities.[1a]

The colony exists at little more than subsistence level and has precious few exports of any value to the subsector. None choose to live there, and most would leave if they had the means.[1a]

Ordo Calixis Mission

An Inquisitorial mission report, Mission DTT/99W from an Oblationist member of the Tenebrae Collegiun within the Ordo Calixis, records the visitation of Inquisitor Halk and the Tyrant Star on Misery IX.[1b] The Reaper cell would be dispatched from Facility 9k on Archaos to Misery IX's 12th moon.[1a]

The Oblationist had originally sent a Reaper cell to the world's 12th moon on an unspecified mission against an unspecified foe that posed a direct threat to the Collegium. Once the Oblationist learned that Inquisitor Halk recently set out for Misery, they would update the Reaper cell's mission profile to terminate Halk with extreme urgency if encountered.[1b]

The only member of the Reaper cell to return to Facility 9k was Agent KXK-99 in a fearful state. The agent, Nwana Zhankis, would appear to have had her mind blasted and it was unlikely she would be able to continue as a useful operative to the Oblationists. The Oblationist could only extract fragments of what transpired during the mission, but the resulting evidence from the fragment would make it unclear whether or not Halk survived the events of the mission.[1b]

The Oblationist goes on to state that if Halk survived, then every other member of the Tenebrae Collegium would be seeking him out. They go on to state it was unlikely that Halk clung to sanity after these events, but that if he did they couldn't risk evidence of the Reaper cell's attack upon him. This risk of their betrayal being exposed would spur the Oblationist to call their fellows to finally rise up and take the opportunity to purse the Ordos Calixis of their foes.[1b]

Mission Extract

Fragments extracted from Mission DTT/99W:[1b]

  • Fragment 1: The interface terminal at the Misery IX colony hub. The facility was rundown and ill maintained. The entire terminal was half-lit, and the cargo handlers had fled to the shadows.
  • Fragment 2: A crowd gathered somewhere in the service district. Approximately 100 people were looking up towards the sky, their hands clamped over their ears.
  • Fragment 3: Inquisitor Halk is surrounded by a group of Tech-Priests, many of whom were taking readings from a vast array of instruments pointed up towards the sky.
  • Fragment 4: <VIDEO ARCHIVE SEQUESTERED>
  • Fragment 5: The aftermath of the visitation of the Tyrant Star. The colonists were sent into some form of atavistic rage. They tore into their fellows with tooth and nail, ripping each other apart with their bare hands. The Tech-Priests are all dead, a number of them having suffered cranial implosion at the moment of the visitation. Halk was nowhere to be seen, nor was there any evidence of his fate.
