Remembrancer
| This article is about the Imperial order; for the Space Marine organ, see Omophagea. |
The Remembrancer Order was a group of poets, journalists, imagists and writers that were sent to accompany the Imperial forces during the later years of the Great Crusade, once the Emperor had returned to Terra.[1] Remembrancers continue to serve in the Era Indomitus.[13]
The term Remembrancer also appears to refer to any historian in general, even those who predate the existence of the Remembrancer Order. Several historians of M2 Terra have been described by the Imperium as remembrancers.[27][28]

Pre-Imperial Remembrancers
These remembrancers predate the Great Crusade, as well as predate the Imperium and the Unification Wars:
The Great Crusade
During the Great Crusade, various chroniclers and recorders had been accompanying Imperial forces as individuals, but their records were piecemeal and irregular. Following the victory at Ullanor, it was decided that a more formal and authoritative celebration of mankind's reunification was needed.[1] The Order of Remembrancers was ratified by the Council of Terra following a petition by Solomon Voss, with the aid of Askarid Sha, directly to the Emperor with the goal of forming an order of people to be the Imperium's memory of its foundation and reflect the truth of the Great Crusade.[17] The remembrancers were recruited from all levels of Terran society and from the societies of other key Imperial worlds, based on the merit of their creative gifts. Almost 4.3 million remembrancers were sent abroad in the first months following the ratification of the bill, assigned to join all the key expedition fleets active in the expanding Imperium.[1]
However they were generally disliked by both the regular troops and the Astartes. Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves, was rumoured to have groused that all remembrancers should be given weapons if they wanted to be on the front lines.[1]
When the Horus Heresy began, the Imperium issued the Edict of Dissolution which officially dissolved the Order of Remembrancers and removed the status they once held[18], although the reason for the Dissolution was kept from the former Remembrancers. Further, on the orders of Malcador, they were to be immediately sent to Terra, where they would be debriefed by his office.[11] Later on during the Siege of Terra Dorn and Malcador agreed to restore the Remembrancer Order under Kyril Sindermann. This time, the Remembrancer's symbol was the Inquisitorial "I", representing their role as interrogators as they now interviewed subjects for historical documentation.[16b]

Note that another organization, the Historical Revision Unit, was created at an unstated date Post-Heresy whose members, called Historitors, also served as historians in general. It is not clear if they are also considered remembrancers.[30]
Other post heresy historians are not necessarily given the specific title of either remembrancer or Historitor, but are included here for convenience.
Known Remembrancers of M31
- Diomedon of Luna - Remembrancer who covered events of The Great Scouring[29]
Known Remembrancers of M41 and Beyond
In the 41st Millennium, the title of Remembrancer is still used, although how it came to be used again is unknown. These "modern" remembrancers appear to record the history of the Imperium, much like the remembrancers of the Great Crusade. However, unlike remembrancers of the Great Crusade, "modern" remembrancers do not appear to accompany Imperial armies into the field.[7b]
- Tremault - M41 era remembrancer. Wrote The Accounts of the Tallarn.[7a]
- Lev Tieron - Personally appointed by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman his personal Remembrancer at the end of the Ultramar Campaign.[13]
- Theta-Scion - Recorded the events of the Dark Crusade[23][25] and the Kaurava campaign.[24]
- Ayjaepi Clothier - Era Indomitus historian who wrote In Blackest Night: The Millennial Wars Appraised in 127.M42, covering events of the 13th Black Crusade and the Fourth Tyrannic War. A chapter of his book was devoted to the involvement of Ciaphas Cain in the Second Siege of Perlia, and was quoted by Amberly Vail when editing Cain's memoirs[26a]; she considered him an authoritative source.[26b]
"The Planet Cronus, beset on all sides by tides of war. This once quiet colony became a savage battlefield. Seven armies clashed on this one world each refusing to back down. Each convinced it was in the right. A dark crusade had begun. It could only end with the total victory of one of these factions and the total defeat of all others.”
