History
The Regiment was founded around 218.M41 in the city of Urbitane, in the Guildhall of the Sameter Agricultural Fraternity on Furnace Street.[1][Note 1]
At one point the regiment was shipped out to the sixteen-month liberation war on Surealis Six. In 220.M41, the regiment was deployed in the Battle of Klodeshi Heights.[1][Note 2]

In 228.M41, 519 of the regiment's veterans were mustered out and returned to Sameter, where they tried to reintegrate back into Imperial society in Urbitane, only to find that the city had become increasingly rundown since they had left.[1][Note 3] Worse, after the trauma they had suffered during the brutal Surealis campaign, many of the returning veterans had developed severe shellshock and over 200 of them died over the next thirteen years from various skin cancers contracted on Surealis. In the now extremely depressed and poverty-stricken city they saw what they perceived as signs of heresy all around them. Believing that it was their duty to purge their world of the heretical filth they saw, and not trusting the authorities to help them, they started a series of ritual murders of Imperial citizens - those that had committed acts that the veterans couldn't help but associate with worship of the Dark Powers.[1]
After Urbitane's Arbites discovered a number of the murder victims and determined that their deaths were linked, they, ironically, believed the murders to be a sign of a Chaos Cult being active in the city. Subsequently, Minister Hansaard contacted Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn (who was on Sameter pursuing a lead on an unrelated case at the time). Eisenhorn agreed that the murders could indicate the presence of an heretical cult and aided the Arbites' investigation.[1]
During the investigation Eisenhorn ended up questioning some of the veterans as potential witnesses (not knowing of their history). The former Guardsmen then attempted to ambush the inquisitor and his agents as they were searching one of the crime scenes. There was a struggle and one Guardsman was killed before the others got away. On examining the body and finding the link between the veterans and the murders, the Arbites rounded up any of the surviving veterans they could find, although some were able to slip through the net.[1]
Eisenhorn and the Arbites were able to track down some of the missing veterans to the same agricultural guildhall that was used as the regiment's recruitment post. He attempted to talk to them, telling them that the war was over, that the Inquisition was now here to take over dealing with the "heretics" and that they had made the Emperor proud. However, after one of the Guardsmen became agitated and drew a laspistol, Eisenhorn had no choice but to order his men and the Arbites to defend themselves. In the ensuing firefight, five Arbites were killed and Eisenhorn himself lost one of his hands, but all of the remaining veterans were killed, having fought to their last.[1]
Organisation
Sameter has a proud tradition of mixed-sex foundings, sending both men and women off to serve side by side, and the Ninth Infantry was no exception.[1]
Heraldry
The Ninth Sameter's regimental symbol was an ear of wheat, as Urbitane was a major supplier of agricultural products and machinery.[1]
