The Sanctus Line is an Imperial region of Segmentum Pacificus, that was turned into a massive defensive fortification in M42, due to sharing a border with Segmentum Solar. It is ultimately designed to prevent the Imperium's enemies from invading the Sol System and threatening Terra itself.[1a]

Description

Key worlds within the Sanctus Line have been heavily fortified by Imperial strike forces, whose commanders have been charged with defending them. Once given a world to protect, their commanders are authorized to take all measures to secure them and will use their strike forces to end any threats or weaknesses the worlds may contain[1a][1b]. This includes even executing Planetary Governors that are perceived to have failed in their duties. These worlds are also required to provide a tithe to the Sanctus Line, so that it can continue to carry out its function of protecting the Sol System[1b]. However because of this, the Sanctus Line is often attacked by the Imperium's foes who wish to invade Terra.[1a]

Spoiler!
The following paragraphs contain spoilers for: Leviathan (Novel)

The Sanctus Line world Regium has since been lost, though, due to an invasion by Hive Fleet Leviathan. In order to prevent it from being consumed, however, Regium's commander, Lieutenant Varus Castamon, sought to cause the world to explode and also destroy the Hive Fleet in the process[1c]. The resulting explosion did just that, but only Castamon and four other Imperials survived Regium's destruction. There is now a hole in the Sanctus Line, though, and the Lieutenant is warning its other worlds of Regium's loss.[1d] This became known as the Regium Breach and Lord Solar Leontus has begun an offensive to seal it.[2]
