The Savlar Chem-Dogs are a Penal Legion of the Imperial Guard, composed of some of the most hardened criminals and desperadoes in the Imperium. Recruits are drawn from the prisons on the planet Savlar by the promise to allow them to keep anything they take from the battlefield, as well as the chance to get away from Savlar's highly toxic environment.

Recruitment & Training
The Chem-Dogs were conscripted into the Imperial Guard en masse in order to meet the Imperium's desperate need for troops during the Third War for Armageddon. Originally founded by Judge Callistar to put down an armed uprising on their homeworld, he realised the Chem-Dogs could be made into an effective fighting force with the right motivation. Therefore the Chem-Dogs were given the following directives: they could keep any war loot they took off the enemy, but if they broke the law they would be sent back to Savlar.[1]
This agreement is referred to as The Deal and remains in place as long as the items the Chem-Dogs seek to loot aren't esoteric xenos weapons, previously held by mutants or tainted by Chaos.[18] Other minor loot which the Chem-Dogs collect can also range from narcotics, lewd picts, lho-sticks, jewellery to gold teeth which they tend to hide in boot compartments or secret pockets sewn onto their uniforms as contraband.[19c]
Ever since the Regiment's inception the people who make up the ranks of the Chem-Dogs tend to come from various backgrounds when it comes to the matter of what caused them to be forced into the ranks of the Imperial Guard and shipped off to other warzones across the Imperium, whether the supposed crime is either an actual offence on the behalf of the convict or simple luckless cruelty. Examples include the prisoner in question having been framed for their crimes by their superior officers on some distant warzone,[19c] priests stripped of their vestiges,[19d] thrown away for miscounting grains on an agri-world[19b] or simply snatched by press-gangers while passed out from being drunk in an establishment on the surface of Savlar itself.[19a]
Combat Doctrine
Savlar Chem-Dogs excel in fighting in the cramped, noxious battlefields found in Armageddon's Underhives. They are also notorious thieves, scavengers, anarchists and worst, stopping to strip the dead of their valuables in the midst of battle, while many inhale a type of standard-issue altered chems which puts them into a hyper-aggressive state. For this reason, Chem-Dog regiments include Commissars to watch over them.[1][2]
At least some Savlar regiments are classed as Light Infantry.[11a] The Chem-Dogs also make use of Ogryns and Rough Riders, the latter riding into battle on ungainly "Chem-Beasts" native to Savlar and sometimes forming their own regiments of Chem-Riders.[1][2]
The higher officers of Savlar regiments are usually not native to Savlar itself, instead being graduates of Schola Progenium facilities. The regiments are often led by Commissar-Colonels.[11b]
Equipment
Chem-Dog guardsmen even with their looting edicts are still also given standard-issue lasguns and trench-clear shotguns, which tends to be a rare plus bizarre sight for most Savlars.[19a] But much of the Chem-Dogs' equipment is more often than not stolen from other Imperial Guard regiments, and many troopers will often carry non-standard gear into battle, ranging from improvised armour and stolen vox-equipment to archaeotech. The standard Savlar-pattern rebreather is a bulky and awkward device with a four-tube canister and filter mask and most are frequently modified to include nitro-chem inhalers for the intake of dangerous hyper-aggression chemicals.[1][2]
The pillaged possessions of other Regiments which the Savlars loot though are generally boundless, including lasguns, pistols to even knives from Necromunda, Mordian, Catachan, Tallarn, Haephos and Vostroya (even including fur hats)[19a] as the Savlars bear weapons from a hundred different worlds, ripped from the corpses of dead loyalists.[19e] Though some Chem-Dogs will sometimes go far as discreetly killing guardsmen from other foreign regiments if a particular item on their comrade can catch their eye, such was the case when Rastus of the Bastards of Midas regiment acquired a partly serrated blade of black steel from a Catachan Jungle Fighter, who had said the the Chem-Dog would only get the blade over her dead body, leading to guardsman Rastus murdering her.[20]
The Chem-Dogs also sometimes barter the spoils they collect from their looting actions but this never tends to apply to outsiders beyond the regiment itself.[19a]
Vehicles used by the Chem-Dogs include Chimeras,[11a] Sentinels, Hellhounds, and Leman Russ Battle Tanks, including the Demolisher, Vanquisher and Exterminator variants. For artillery the Chem-Dogs make use of Griffons and Basilisks, and they prefer Flamers and Heavy Bolters.[1][2]
