Shas'O Monat Kais was a student of Commander Puretide. Under Puretide's tutelage, Kais became a master of the Monat ("Lone Warrior") method of combat.
Appearance and Personality
Kais is described as compact and muscular, with an unassuming nature about him. He has heterochromatic eyes,[2b] with one iris purple and the other black.[5a]
History
Tutelage
Kais begun his tutelage under Twiceblade at only four Tau'cyr old. On his first day of training Kais slinked away. When caught by Twiceblade, Kais was reprimanded in front of his entire class. This hardened Kais' heart. Twiceblade, when speaking around two to three centuries later, would comment that the look in Kais' eyes then still haunted him.[5a]
At an unknown point in time after this Kais, alongside Shadowsun and Farsight, was selected to be a pupil of Master Puretide.[2c] Kais often held an independant streak, though he did draw close with Farsight and Shadowsun. Kais and Farsight would both chide Shadowsun for how often she spoke of ghosts.[3a] Kais would struggle to pick up on subtleties in the bond the three shared.[3b] During their tutelage under Puretide, Kais would learn not just from Puretide, but also his fellow students, such as when Shadowsun taught Kais how to independantly focus his eyes.[5c]
Fourth Sphere Expansion
After the end of the Damocles Gulf Crusade, Shas'O Kais was put into stasis to be preserved until he was needed.[1] He spent 300 tau'cyr (244.5 years) before being awoken. An error in the cryogenic process caused Kais to be fully conscious the entire time.[5a][Conflicting Sources]
In 103.999.M41, Shas'O'Kais lead the Tau to victory in their conquest which would go on to be the Fi'rios Sept. He was then put back into stasis.[1][4][Conflicting Sources]
During the Tau's Fourth Sphere Expansion, O'Kais was sent along with the Tau's fleet. He remained in stasis- although his stasis chamber had been somehow altered to keep his mind active. During this forced state of consciousness, Kais devised countless tactics and strategies to combat almost every foe the Tau had encountered.[5a]
In M42, he was deployed to a mission on Duskenwald. He used a XV95 Ghostkeel to attack an Angels of Absolution facility housing several psykers. After killing his intended targets alongside several Astartes, his battlesuit was disabled by an orbital bombardment, forcing him to flee. The data from this battle was recovered by the Tau to be used as the basis for training a force with skills similar to his.[5d]
Wargear
During his mission on Duskenwald, Kais used a XV95 Ghostkeel that had formerly belonged to his tutor Twiceblade, armed with a Fusion Collider and twinlinked Fusion Blasters.[5b]
Trivia
- 'Kais' means 'Skillful' in T'au language.[5e]
- There are three prominent Tau Fire Caste members named Kais. In 2001 the video game Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior released, alongside a companion novel, with the main character named Shas'la T'au Kais. When Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade was released in 2006 there was much speculation that the leader of Tau forces in the game, Shas'O Kais, was the same Kais after having been elevated to 'O rank. Relic entertainment employees gave contradictory answers. Later appearances of a Shas'O Kais in Tau codices and Phil Kelly novels have also been speculated by fans to be the same Kais. Phil Kelly has been vauge about who the Kais in his novels is. Chronologically speaking, it is unlikely Shas'la T'au Kais is the Shas'O Kais from Dawn of War, as the events of Dawn of War happen before the events of Fire Warrior.
Conflicting Sources
- The 6th Edition Tau Codex mentions that Shas'O Kais, a student of Puretide, was taken out of stasis on 103.999.M41. However, in the Phil Kelly novel War of Secrets, Kais remarks that he was placed into stasis 300 tau'cyr (244.5 years) ago. As War of Secrets is set after the start of the Indomitus Crusade it takes place after 103.999.M41.
