The Sigillite's Retreat is a slender and moldering stone tower within the Imperial Palace's Sanctum Imperialis, which was named after its former owner, Malcador the Sigillite.[1a]

History

During the time of the Horus Heresy, he occasionally used the tower as a place to think or study and also had several laboratories built within it. Yet despite Malcador's importance, the Retreat had been built irregularly and had the shape of an arthritic Human finger as a result. The tower was also small, shabby and ancient looking, when compared to the rest of the Sanctum Imperialis's structures, which the Sigillite's Retreat was well isolated from. However, while it appears to be a relic from another age, the tower's security measures were of a high level, during the Horus Heresy, and its entrance was barred with a heavy and blast-proof code-activated door. Those invited by Malcador could gain entry into the Retreat while he was there, but if he was not present, then a member of the Legio Custodes was required to enter advanced permission codes on its hololithic door-plate, to gain entry.[1a]

During the Horus Heresy, Malcador also kept the notes of the Biotechnical Division's senior technicians within his laboratories, which detailed the creation process of the Legio Astartes, These included the writings of the scientists Amar Astarte, Ezekiel Sedayne, Baskow and DeVie. These labs and notes were later used by the biomechanical engineer Basilio Fo, near the end of the Heresy's Siege of Terra, as he sought to create a bio-weapon that would kill the traitorous Primarch, Warmaster Horus.[1b]
