The Sons of Sanguinius are a Blood Angels Successor Chapter.[1]

Overview

They were created in the Second Founding,[1][Conflicting sources] alongside the Flesh Eaters and Blood Drinkers, while the Chapter's Gene-seed was cultured from the Blood Angels' 6th company. The Sons are also noted for being bloodthirsty zealots, who are devoted protectors of Imperial doctrine and they relish the opportunity to kill in their Primarch's name. In fact, the Sons will happily disembowel a child if their Chaplains order them to.[2b]

In battle, the Chapter prefers to close with the enemy quickly, making use of jump packs and bikes to accomplish this. As a result of this, most of the Sons' Battle Companies only have two Devastator Squads within their ranks. The Chapter does, however, employ lots of Tactical Squads in battle, as the Chapter favours the slow steady advances they provide their forces with.[2b]

Power Armour

To suit their dark nature, the Sons' power armour is a red terracotta in color and this gives the Chapter a grim and scary appearance. In order to contrast with the armour's coloring, the Sons' shoulder pads are given a yellow trim and their chest Aquilas are bone or yellow colored. Like their progenitors, the Sons of Sanguinius denote squad type with helmet colour: Tactical Marines wear white helmets, Assault Marines wear bone helmets, Devastators wear light blue helmets, and Veterans wear black helmets. No member of the Chapter wears red helmets, though those who distinguish themselves with extreme levels of brutality in battle, are awarded with bright red mouth pieces. While the Sons do have Terminator Armour, the Chapter only has a dozen working relic suits of the armour and they are rarely used in battle.[2b]

Also while the Chapter believes that Sanguinius lives on within the Sanguinary Brotherhood, they still mourn their Primarch's death. To symbolize this, the Sons are required to wear at least one black armoured plate on their power armour, which is normally their shoulder pads. However those whose dreams are haunted by visions of the Horus Heresy make a different choice. These visions are through the eyes of Sanguinius himself and the afflicted Sons are left with a longing to meet their Primarch. Because this can never be granted, though, they are left morose, bitter and depressed over his death. This result in these Sons choosing to wear black leg armour, knee pads or even entire suits of black armour instead.[2b]

Chaplains

It is from the ranks of these bitter Sons, that the Chapter recruits their Chaplains from. When this occurs, their sadness for the loss of Sanguinius is instead replaced with an all-consuming hatred of heretics and infidels. As in the Sons' eyes, it was heretics who were responsible for their Primarch's death.[2b]

Librarians

The Chapter notably does not use Librarians, as they view psychic powers as the tool of Chaos. This has led the Sons of Sanguinius to kill any Aspirants that display any psychic ability. However the Chapter still makes use of a Librarium and the ranks that go with it. These non-psyker Librarians, though, spend their time studying the Chapter's ancient holy books and memorizing its various songs, chants and verses. They will take these books into battle with them, along with bolt pistols and frag grenades, and will lead their Battle Brothers in songs about Sanguinius, as they read verses from the holy books. Those nearby the Librarians will join in as well and will become inspired by the verses, as they slowly walk forward. This causes the Sons of Sanguinious to fight with even more vigor and to rapidly fire their weapons at the Chapter's foes.[2b]

The Feast

Before they begin a campaign, crusade, or major battle, each of the Sons of Sanguinious' Companies will perform an ancient ritual known as The Feast. This involves sacrificing a young member of the Chapter who has performed valiant deeds and afterwards, the Company's Chaplain will fill gold chalices with the slain Space Marine's blood. Each member of the Company will then drink deeply from the chalices in order to spread the young Space Marine's courage and devotion to his Battle Brothers. This not only stirs the Company to great feats of savagery and devotion, but also controls the Red Thirst. This ensures that only a few members of the Company will succumb to the Sons of Sanguinius' Gene-seed flaw.[2b]

Red Thirst

However despite the protection The Feast grants them, the Chapter believes the Red Thirst is a blessing and a test from Sanguinius. It is used by the Sons to weed out Heretics from their ranks and the flaw aids in keeping the Chapter pure.[2b]

Death Company

Though the Sons of Sanguinius can fall to the Black Rage, the Chapter does not use their Death Company in battle.[2b]

Heraldry

The Chapter's badge is a winged chalice that is overflowing with blood, which they view as a symbol of Sanguinius himself.[2b]

History

Captain Damien Mordua's 3rd Company was once assigned to the Havaius System, which led it to frequently battle the forces of Craftworld Jainas Shelwe. However, the Company is now assigned to the Inglus Nebula's Lesterius System, which is heavily infested by Orks.[2b]
