A brother or battle-brother is the lowest rank within a Space Marine Chapter that all Neophytes become before earning honour in battle and rising up the ranks. Battle-brothers have endured decades of training before becoming a fully fledged Space Marine and form squads of up to 10 marines, including the sergeant or equivalent from whom the battle-brother takes his orders, but is capable of acting alone if the sergeant dies in combat. Battle-brothers are well versed in the art of combat and are able to effectively use most weapons with the chapters armoury, including melee weapons such as the chainsword, ranged weapons such as the bolter or plasma gun, long ranged weapons like the lascannon or heavy bolter, short ranged weapons such as the flamer or melta gun. Battle-brothers who show an aptitude towards one aspect of battle may find themselves getting inducted within the Devastator or Assault squads, or perhaps they perform the repair rites on their weapons so meticulously that they are sent to Mars to train as techmarines1 Battle-brother is also used to describe another Space Marine regardless of rank when that rank is unknown or is what a sergeant or higher calls his subordinates1 Although many chapters differ their teachings from the codex and vary the names and ranks given to the squads and Space Marines that undergo the transformation from Neophyte, the individuals within those squads are still referred to as battle-brothers.2 ==Sources==*1 Codex: Space Marines (5th Edition)*2 Codex: Space Wolves (5th Edition)
