Purgatory was a minor Imperial world garrisoned by a small force of [[Cadian Shock Troopers]].{{Fn|1b}} The planet was attacked by a [[Chaos Warband|Warband]] of [[Night Lords]] [[Chaos Space Marines]], who massacred the planet's defense forces and enslaved the remaining population; later leaving the planet with their ships' holds filled with slaves.{{Fn|3}} A later investigation by the [[Ultramarines]] and the [[Ordo Malleus]] of the [[Inquisition]] , led by inquisitor [[Horst]],{{Fn|4}} revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet, in order to locate a [[Warp]]-created artefact known as the [[Hand of Night]].,{{Fn|1b}}{{Fn|1c}}{{Fn|1d}} or the [[Hand of Darkness]].
