Purgatory was As a minor Imperial world garrisoned by a small force of prelude to the [[Cadian Shock Troopers12th Black Crusade]].,{{Fn|1b5}} The the planet was attacked by a [[Chaos Warband|Warbandwarband]] of [[Night Lords]] [[Chaos Space Marines]], who massacred the planet's defense defence forces and enslaved the remaining population; later leaving the planet with their ships' holds filled with slaves.{{Fn|3}} A later investigation by the [[Ultramarines]] and the [[Ordo Malleus]] of the [[Inquisition]], led by inquisitor [[Horst]],{{Fn|4}} revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet in order to locate a [[Warp]]-created artefact known as the Hand of Night,{{Fn|1b}}{{Fn|1c}}{{Fn|1d}} or the [[Hand of Darkness]].
