Having a strength of many billions, the Excertus Imperialis included not only second line and support troops but also functionaries, labourers, void crew, logisticians, almoners, adepts and staff officers. It was divided into many divisions, each with a singular purpose, including the [[Solar Auxilia]], the [[Imperial Army]] and the [[Imperial Militia]].{{Fn|1}}
Besides personnel, the Excertus Imperialis also provided the weapons, equipment, war machines, [[Transport Ship|transport]] and combat spaceships necessary to prosecute the Great Crusade.{{Fn|1}}
The Excertus imperialist, while in theory ultimately under the [[Officio Militaris]] situated on [[Terra]], was in practice commanded by the [[Primarch]]-dominated [[War Council]], having to obey all the principal agents of the Great Crusade, from [[Navigator House]]s to [[Planetary Governor]]s.{{Fn|1}}
