Gramarye is an Imperial Industrial World, that once held a stronghold of the First Legion, during the Great Crusade. It was also the seat of power for the First Legion's Council of Masters, which ruled the Legion after the death of Grandmaster Urian Vendraig.11a
This changed after the Primarch Lion El'Jonson gained control of the Legion and it was reborn as the Dark Angels. Afterwards the old, grand stronghold was demolished, as the new seat of the Legion's power would be aboard the Invincible Reason. In its place, El'Jonson ordered that a more modest fortress be built, to secure the industrial sprawl of Gramarye.11a Afterwards, Gramayre would serve as one of the two large outposts held by the Legion which saw the largest concentration of the Legion’s infrastructure. Its fortress hall’s would play host to the Hexagrammaton’s Council of Masters. With Gramayre’s vast industrial facilities producing many of the Legion's more esoteric weapons which had long been concealed from the scrutiny of the Mechanicum.1b The standard pattern of operations within the Legion saw it used as a base for resupply for a force that was primarily based within the mobile halls of the fleet. Only on the rarest of occasions did any of the Chapters of the Dark Angels return to their halls for any lengthy period of rest, with garrison duty left to the rawest recruits and those masters and seneschals with Deathwing lifeguard cadres that stood warden over it’s domain. The world was considered heavily fortified and defended.1b
