In short: Yes, you can include such things under the condition that you can make a convincing case for it. An author's explicit acknowledgement isn't always necessary. :: I was lucky enough to get word from Mr. Stewart himself on this issue and have added that as a source. His explanation did not actually specify which elements of the Reclaimers were deliberate Wombles references, so I still tried to take care to frame all of the above as possibilities rather than facts.
