Organized by field of study:
*The Cult of Change, the Cult of Mutation, and the Cult of Scheming seek to worship Tzeentch and honor honour him by seeking various kinds of change (for the first two) or convolution (for the latter) for their own sake, viewing them as goals in and of themselves.
*The Cult of Duplicity and Cult of Manipulation focus on victory through shrouding their actions in secrecy.
*The Cult of Knowledge and the Cult of Magic focus on victory through securing and exploiting arcane objects of great power, differing only in which particular objects are more likely to draw their interest.

Conflicting sources
*In older source material—pre-dating the addition of the Rubric of Ahriman to the background—not all Thousand Sons were said to be psykerspsykers, though all had sorcerous knowledge and various minor levels of magic ability. They operated in effectively the same way—individuals of great power supported by line troops—but for completely different reasons. In addition, earlier edition models and artwork made much use of the trope of Tzeentch gifting physical mutations upon his followers. This trope vanished from the background with the introductions of the Thousand Sons' distinctive visual design, their own unique miniatures and the concept of Rubric Marines, but has since been reincorporated into the background as the Flesh-change.
*In the novel A Thousand Sons, it is stated that the Thousand Sons Legion is 10,000 strong by the time of the Burning of Prospero.3h However numbers later provided by the Forge World rulebooks stated their size to be 89,000-90,000.38p The subsequent Siege of Terra novella Fury of Magnus shows even their post-Burning of Prospero strength to be 9,000.50c
