Before the Burning of Prospero, the Thousand Sons were a small but formidable Legion of warrior-scholars. Unlike more martial Legions, the Thousand Sons sought not to simply conquer worlds but rather to transform them into the enlightened vision of the Imperial Truth. Wherever they went, they culled lore with an insatiable hunger and sought to learn everything they could about the history of the Galaxy. Many worlds were conquered and studied by the Thousand Sons in this manner, while worlds already taken by the Great Crusade were similarly visited by Legion expeditions in search of new lore. It is said that Magnus himself, accompanied by Perturabo, personally journeyed into the depths of Terra in order to learn the secrets of its ancient history. Sometimes campaigns fought by the Thousand Sons made little strategic sense, and they would often leave a conflict or join another seemingly at random, drawing criticism and hostility from other Imperial forces.38q
At a base tactical level, the Thousand Sons resembled those of their brother Legions. These included units of armored armoured Space Marines support by heavy weapons, Sky Hunters squadrons, armored armoured vehicles, and aircraft. While known for their extensive use of Librarians, the Thousand Sons still waged war in a conventional manner and were known for there preference for mechanized infantry and Tactical Squads. The Legion made heavy use of Land Speeders, Jetbikes, and aircraft to support these mobile units. The Legion also was known for its reconnaissance capabilities, and this combined with their psychic abilities allowed them to rapidly overrun heavily fortified or armored armoured enemies without the heavy weapons and vehicles seen in other Legions. Unlike other Legions such as the Iron Warriors or Death Guard, the Thousand Sons avoided attrition warfare and meat grinder assaults at all costs. Regardless of the prize at stake, they would never allow themselves to become encircled or undertake symbolic sacrificial actions.38q
