Overview
Ork legend (such as it is) is generally legends, passed down by the Runtherds. They speak ,25 tell of of a legendary caste "Lost Race" of Brainboyz, Snotlings which were smarter in "da old days" and "used ta boss us Orks around".5 The exact truth is difficult to know as Orks do not keep written records, relying instead upon oral histories to remember their past.2 It is the speculation of greenskins who created Imperial scholars that as the Orks themselves were not responsible for the development of today. This ancient race was extremely intelligentthe legendary lost Ork Standard Cconstruct Templates as even their Mekboyz could not have understood it, 35 and held dominion over that indeed there may have been an ancient Orkish caste upon its homeworld which initiated the Ork expansion into space5 – the Ork castes. They were much smaller than their servants, so they bred Waaagh!s of today being the unexpected byproduct of the efforts of the Orks to be as strong and fierce as possible to protect them from predators and invadersBrain Boyz.24
It was believed that this group was Brainboyz were Greenskins with the driving force behind same symbiotic algae in their civilisation and were responsible for developing their technology skin as well as directing all Orkish races15 – indeed it was these Brainboyz which gave the different other Orkish castesthis skin as they were their creators and progenitors. There is even some speculation that both 5 The Brainboyz, through potent genetic manipulation, grew these ever tougher, larger, and more butal OrksMutant s4 to do thier work and fight in wars: first growing the slave caste of Gretchins may have been specialised and eventually the unstoppable warrior caste of mutantOrks that .54 Though their Ork and Gretchin servants were deliberately created by the Brain Boyz to serve certain dutiesanything but intellectual, though it believed that the truth they had strong survival instincts and an innate understanding of their own universe2 – to this will never be known for certain. Regardlessend, it is known that the Brain Boyz died or possibly out long ago and the Orks inherited of some awareness of their civilisation to the point that this ruling caste become little more than legend. According to Orkish beliefsown finality, 124 the Brain Boyz died from a great plague which ran across many centuries that caused their numbers to dwindle included an innate technical skills and eventually led to their extinction. It is believed that this caste was aware some knowledge of their falling numbers and took steps to preserve their knowledge by engineering it into technology within the genetic structure strucutre of their slaves. This lasting legacy allowed the Orks to retain their high level of technology in later years by way of artificial strands of DNA these Mutants, a boon which contains knowledge imprinted in their metabolism that allowed created the Orks to live following the demise Mekboys1 and enabled Orkish continuance of their mastersempire.14
Snotlings are also thought to be remnants of this lost race. It is believed that As intelligent as the underground cave fungiBrainboyz were, which the they were unaware that they owed this intelligence to their diet: Snotlings are symbiotic withthe fungi they eat, caused a genetic mutation since early days cultivating their spores in the underground cave-systems of their homeworld,3 and it was generations of this diet that stimulated the growth of their brainsand uplifted them to sapience. Over This ignorance was their undoing5 The Brainboyz had some warning that they were over-reliant upon the generationsfungus, as they expanded into space they were unable to grow the fungus off-world, instead relying upon shipments from the Snotling brains developed homeworld to their full potential due colonies. Where these shipments were disrupted for years, the world would fall to this fungus, and this intelligent lost race the domination of Snotlings (Brainboyz) eventually developed Ork-kind, with the GretchinOrk as an intermediary developments. These less intelligent creatures 3 But, in large, they were fed ignorant to the possibility that these fungi could cause civilizational collapse.5 The exact nature of that collapse varies across stories but all end the same as SquigsOrks rather than overthrow their oppressors and establish a new order for the Greenskins, forcing the intellect-enhancing fungus devolution of the Brainboyz consumedinto Snotlings.12345 It is difficult to piece together this time in Ork history in any detail, and exists primarily through fragments of Ork legends{. However{Fn|5}} Whatever the truth of the matter, over time the Orks began Brain Boyz died out long ago: an ancient caste reduced to question why such diminutive creatures little more than legend4 *Some Runtherds tell that the servant castes were giving orderput to work farming and harvesting the raw fungi, and that as they worked, they too began to acquire eat the special fungus – within a few generations their Ork brains growing smart enough for themselvesviolent revolution. The Orks enslaved their masters and denied them their fungi. This As the Brainboys regressed into Snotlings, the Orks lost their knowledge of cultivation and so the fungus did not have an effect upon became less abundant: the Orks also began to regress to their base inteligence, leaving them in the state they are today.5 *Other Runtherds tell agree that the Orks were the labourers which harvested the fungi, but expounded that it was distrust which drove them to eat the crop. Orkshad only been fed a diet of Squigs, and without believing the fungusspecial as it was forbidden instead all at once sat down and ate every last toadstool, mushroom, and puffball to the spore on the homeworld – and that while the feast had no effect on Ork brains, the Brainboyz eventually regressed denial of this crucial nutrient stupefied the Snotlings into a juvenile their current state. The Orksfound themselves in charge, as crude successors to a young empire which they brought across the universe.3*Some legends stimply tell that it was an un-named tragedy during an Ork rebellion which caused the Brainboyz to regress into Snotlings2*Some Ork legends hold that it was a great centuries-long plague which stunted the Brainboyz civilization causing the whole race to die out, leaving a power void for the Orks to fill.124 Runtherds maintain that the Snotlings, mischievious and playful creatures content frolicking in cess-pits and harsh catching Squigs, are the same species as they werethe Brainboyz: forever trapped in their underdeveloped pre-juvenile state.3 The "Lost Race" is not lost, now rather the most intelligent slaves of their kind own creations; and inherited the civilization Orks the inheritors to their civilisation.5 Regardless of the truth, Snotlings manifest from the same fungal spores as the rest of the BrainboyzOrks.36

Trivia
Trivia
In Codex Necrons (3rd Edition), it is mentioned that the Old Ones created a hardy, green-skinned race to defend their last strongholds known as the Krork6 It is implied that this may have been a progenitor to the Orks, which would in turn either suggest that the Lost Race of Brain Boyz is simply a myth told by the Runtherds about their most diminuitive flock, or that the Brain Boyz themselves were created or displaced by the Old Ones and may in some way have been these Krorks.
